South African multidisciplinary creative Kay Kay Ribane continues to expand his artistic vision, this time through a collector's photography book that celebrates African storytelling, elegance, and identity.

While the project was created in collaboration with Stella Artois, Ribane says its heart lies in something far more personal: his ongoing exploration of what he calls "African opulence".

For the creative director, photographer, and fashion storyteller, the collaboration presented an opportunity to merge his own artistic language with themes of heritage, craftsmanship and excellence.

"The beauty about this collaboration is really what it sounds like," Ribane said.

"It was a collaboration where like-minded journeys came together. My desire to explore African opulence met this idea of striving for the perfect serve. It's really a celebration of the pursuit of perfection rather than perfection itself."

Throughout his career, Ribane has become known for producing visually rich work that blends fashion, photography and cultural storytelling. His latest project continues that mission by placing African identity at the centre of refined, aspirational imagery.

Asked what African opulence means to him, Ribane explained that it is rooted in generations of African royalty and cultural traditions while creating space for a new generation to define elegance on its own terms.

"I find a long generation of royalty that permeates African culture, African tradition and music," he said.

"This journey is about investigating what that looks like today. How do we see ourselves in pristine spaces? How do our stories live longer so that when the next generation reflects, they understand that we saw ourselves through a lens of elegance?"

Fashion remains a key part of that visual language.

Ribane said every collaboration is informed by the values of the Ribane Collective, describing it as the creative "head office" from which every idea is born.

Whether working across sport, fashion, or photography, he believes clothing becomes another storytelling tool.

"Fashion is a way of human modification where you can define yourself in a new format," he explained.

At the launch, Ribane wore a white suit by South African designer Musawenkosi Nkosi, a nod to the traditional all-white dress code associated with Wimbledon while simultaneously celebrating local design talent.

The collector's book itself extends beyond a series of portraits, and the publication documents Ribane's creative journey as he immersed himself in the world of tennis to better understand the symbolism behind the "perfect serve".

"There is a photography book of me on a quest of finding what the perfect serve is," he said.

"I had to learn more by watching tennis games and really embody myself within that world. How do we translate that artistically? These portraits celebrate the sport while exploring the collaboration between art and movement."

For Ribane, the project is ultimately another chapter in his larger creative mission: ensuring African stories are documented with intention, beauty and longevity.

"We're creating work that allows people, especially the next generation, to look back and see themselves represented in prestigious, elegant ways," he said.

The launch drew an influential guest list spanning music, fashion, art and culture, including Langa Mavuso, Thapelo Mokoena, Manana, JR Bogopa, Lloyiso, Bucie, Thebe Magugu, Kuhle Adams, Sindiso Nyoni, Trevor Stuurman and JR Ecko, further reinforcing the event as a celebration of South Africa's creative excellence.

Actress Eve Rasimeni has broken her silence and shared her story about the treatment on the set of the canceled “Pimville”.

Rasimeni portrayed Moghele in the SABC 2 telenovela, which was marred by a wave of controversy stemming from unresolved contractual disputes and breaches between the SABC and Bakwena Productions.

The actress shared a lengthy post across her social media platforms, with pictures of food that they were served on the set.

In her post, Rasimeni reflected on the emotional and financial impact of the production shutting down about two months earlier, claiming that hundreds of cast and crew members were left without support or payment.

Rasimeni, in her post, made several serious allegations, including:

Non-payment of cast and crew: claims that more than 300 people were left unpaid after production halted.

Abandonment by production leadership: alleges that producers Rashaka Muofhe and Brenda Muofhe failed to provide answers and left workers to "fend for ourselves."

Threats and intimidation: alleges that cast and crew were warned to remain silent or risk being "dealt with" or blacklisted from the industry.

Rasimeni also exposed alleged unsafe and poor working conditions, with 17 people suffering from food poisoning and the devastating impact some workers faced, including eviction, reliance on antidepressants, a mild stroke, and the loss of a child.

Brenda and Rashaka did not take Rasimeni’s post lightly as she received a cease and desist from their attorneys, claiming her allegations “are false, defamatory and reckless and unsupported by credible evidence”.

Sharing the legal letter on Instagram, Rasimeni said that she would not be silenced and that the truth can never be defamatory. She also revealed that she still has not been paid.

“I experienced these things. I sat in small groups where we would cry and then tell ourselves let’s do this for the show. 

“We had to speak on character names cause we were afraid of speaking your names to just anyone anymore. I feel violated by your actions, and you want to scare me with this!”

On May 25, the SABC announced that "Pimville" had been discontinued due to unresolved contractual obligations and breaches identified by Bakwena Productions.

Bakwena Productions boss Rashaka has denied allegations of mismanaging funds and claimed they are part of a malicious smear campaign targeting his reputation and business interests.

Award-winning actress, director, and entrepreneur Sthandiwe Kgoroge has a career spanning more than 25 years and has firmly established herself as one of South Africa’s most respected and versatile performers.

Throughout her illustrious career, she has stepped into different roles, from a twin, a doctor, an activist, a grandmother, and now an editor-in-chief.

In her latest role, Kgoroge stars as Drum Magazine’s Editor in Chief, Melody MM Makaringe, in the new film “Dear Sis Dolly”.

“For me, it's always the beauty of acting is that you step into various shoes. Here I am stepping into the shoes of an editor, a black female editor who's just so powerful.”

Kgoroge acknowledged the important role that journalism has played in her life as a creative and shared her love of magazines.

Drum magazine has a rich editorial history, with its editors reflecting a fascinating timeline of shifting cultural and political landscapes and the magazine being a huge part of South African culture.

“I direct a lot for True Love, my fashion shoots, and different fashion editorials. I've been observing these people. 

“To finally just have the opportunity for me to be in this role, research was easy, because I've been watching these people. I just had to literally tap into, go down that rabbit hole of all these women that I've admired, all the way back to Liz Khumalo, for instance”. 

With the character of Melody, viewers get to see a black woman in success and in a leadership role, a journey that is not without challenges. Viewers want to see women displayed as strong leaders with their team, even if they are tough on staff.

Kgoroge was conscious of the fact that women in leadership are normally seen as villains, compared to their male counterparts.

“I think for me, I needed to really be careful of that line, but it needed to register and to read that she's tough, because she's trying to bring out the best in these young people who are coming in and competing for the dear sis Dolly column. 

“I needed to just show that she's got a beautiful soft side, and just because she's this person of excellence doesn't mean she's any less of a soft-hearted, beautiful person.”

In preparation for her portrayal of the character, Kgoroge built her up beyond the pages of the script, creating her own character bible.

“The casting director, the producers, the directors can only give you so much. They'll give you the age group. a bit of background acting. Then the rest, which is so beautiful, you break it down for yourself. Because you've been walking in the footsteps of that person.

“The moment you're done, you wash the makeup off, you take the costume off, you leave. Say thank you for the opportunity to play you and represent you. I hope I did my best and you walk away, on to the next one.”

“Dear Sis Dolly” premieres on the big screen at Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas across South Africa from July 3, 2026. The film debuts on the big screen, as opposed to a mainstream TV channel or streaming platform, and calls people back to the cinema.

Kgoroge shared that people should go to the cinema to keep the culture alive before it becomes a distant memory.

“There are people who are busy writing amazing work, and it's showing only at cinemas.”

After making headlines earlier this year, Zimbabwe’s breakout comedic star Learnmore Jonasi is coming to South Africa.

Jonasi joins Trevor Noah's SA National Team of Comedy along with other local comedic talents for a national comedy tour taking place in Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban this September. 

“Every great team needs players who can change the game in one moment. Learnmore is that," said Noah, Captain of South Africa’s National Team of Comedy.

Jonasi has appeared on "America's Got Talent" as a top 5 Finalist, Golden Buzzer recipient, winner of the 2023 Boston Comedy Festival, and the 2023 audience choice at the Jersey City Comedy festival.

The comedian shared his excitement to come back to South Africa in his comment on Savanna Cider's announcement.

He even joked that the real Jonasi is coming to South Africa, making fun of the South African telenovela "The Polygamist" streaming on Netflix.

"The Real Jonasi is coming to South Africa 😅😅😅😅😅😅 super excited to be back," he wrote.

Earlier this year, Jonasi trended after Lebo M lambasted him and served him legal papers after he made a joke about "The Lion King". The papers were served during one of Jonasi's comedy shows.

During an episode of One54 Africa, Jonasi told hosts Godfrey and Akbar Gbajabiamila that the famous chant, "Nants' Ingonyama," translates to “Look, there is a lion, oh my God!”

After one of the most iconic runs in South African TV history, e.tv’s long-running drama “Scandal!” will air for the last time.

Last year, e.tv confirmed that the South African Film and Television award-winning soapie "Scandal!" would be going off screens after more than 20 years, and now the time has arrived.

The channel explained that they believe "Scandal!" has reached the end of its life cycle and will be on air until the end of June 2026.

Leading up to the last chapter, the writers, production team and actors have delivered a jaw-dropping finale filled with moments that have made viewers laugh, cry, and be shocked. 

Grace Mahlaba, the head writer of “Scandal!” in a video on Instagram, answered the burning question of how one writes the final chapter of one of South Africa's most iconic stories and revealed it isn't gentle.

“Finally, the truth catches up with everyone, but most importantly, every villain faces their reckoning,” she said.

Actress Mapaseka Koetle, who has portrayed Didntle for 12 years and is among the last remaining of the original cast, was emotional in a video when she shared what she will miss most about her character and time at “Scandal!”.

Recently, my wife and I decided to revisit season three of Jack Ryan, the fast-paced, complicated espionage series featuring John Krasinski as the title character. But the plot of the show is not really what struck me. Although I’ll touch on it more later, it’s how I used AI to fill in the gaps as I tried to follow the intricate storyline.

We had watched this season before, but for whatever reason — I can’t really remember — we never made it through all the episodes.

As someone with ADHD, a show like this can become very difficult to follow, with characters, motives and incidents coming at you at breakneck pace.

In fact, I’m quite jealous of how my wife manages to scroll Instagram while watching the show and still knows exactly what’s going on at any given moment.

Navigating the Complex Plot of Jack Ryan: A Viewer’s Guide

Sadly, even with my eyes peeled and watching attentively, I still found myself completely lost at sea — much like one of the scientists Jack Ryan tries to rescue at the beginning of the season.

When this happens, I inevitably ask my wife a series of questions such as: “Who’s that guy? He’s with them? Oh, I thought he wasn’t with them. That’s the German ambassador? Oh, it’s the Czech minister? Was that old man the young guy in the 1980s who killed all those nuclear scientists at the beginning?”

As you can imagine, my wife can quickly grow tired of inane questions like these.

And that’s when it struck me. Before we moved on to episode six, I suggested we take a break so I could read up a bit on the plot and get us on the same page.

How ChatGPT Helped Me Understand My Favourite TV Series

Instead of Googling it or hopping over to IMDb, I decided to have a chat with ChatGPT.

I explained my problem and it gave me a brilliant rundown of everything that had happened up to that point in the series. It provided a big-picture summary, a list of the key players with descriptions, and brief plot summaries covering the first four episodes.

Of course, episode five — the one that had left me floundering — was where the big twist arrived. Once again, ChatGPT explained it clearly and concisely.

Within a few minutes, I finally understood who everyone was, what their motivations were and why certain events mattered.

I can now forge ahead with confidence, knowing I can resume season three with a solid understanding of what’s already happened and, hopefully, retain what I watch next.

And if not, I’ll probably just have another chat with my AI app.

As fate, football and pure Mzansi magic would have it, Bafana Bafana did the unthinkable. In a gritty, heart-stopping performance, South Africa pulled off a 1-0 victory over South Korea, defying the odds and booking their ticket straight into the knockout rounds.

Supermodel Bella Hadid has shared an emotional update about her ongoing battle with Lyme disease, opening up about the physical pain, mental exhaustion and isolation that come with living with a chronic illness.

The 29-year-old model took to her Instagram stories to candidly document a recent flare-up, sharing pictures of herself in tears while reflecting on the reality of navigating life with an unpredictable health condition.

Hadid, who was diagnosed with Lyme disease as a teenager, described how difficult it can be to explain her symptoms to others and the emotional impact of living with a body that often feels out of her control.

“I wish it was not so intimidating trying to explain the symptoms of pain, exhaustion, fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, infections, trauma and all of the things that come with chronic illness because it leads to severe isolation and depression, especially over long periods of time,” she wrote.

The model explained that one of the hardest parts of living with a chronic illness is the uncertainty that comes with it, even after trying different treatments and routines.

“You demand answers that no one can find. You fight. You finally have a few good days. You think you’ve found the right protocol, the right routine, the right treatment … and then a flare-up comes back and all of a sudden nothing feels certain again,” she shared.

According to Hadid, the unpredictability of her health has also made everyday life increasingly difficult. She revealed that she often struggles to commit to plans because she never knows how she will feel from one day to the next.

“You wake up with anxiety already living in your body. Physical pain before your feet even touch the floor … And somehow, still have to find the strength to move through another day in a body and mind that are completely exhausted.”

Hadid admitted that, over time, she has learned to mask many of the emotions that come with living with chronic illness because she feels that people who have not experienced it firsthand often struggle to understand.

“Sometimes it feels like unless you’ve lived something like this, or loved someone who has, it’s impossible to fully understand.”

Despite the emotional toll, the model used her platform to encourage others dealing with similar health challenges, reminding them that “there is light, even if you can’t see it today … There is hope.”

In another post, Hadid reflected on the difficult process of finding meaning through hardship.

“As so many have said… I have to remind myself that healing isn’t linear. I believe God puts before us, somehow, only what we are capable of carrying, even when we don’t understand why at the time.”

She added that while she believes every challenge brings a lesson, the reality of living with a chronic illness remains incredibly difficult.

“I have so much gratitude for life, but without living in a body that has more rough days than good … It’s hard to find joy or purpose or reason to even go outside … but we will keep trying! always!”

Hadid ended her message with words of encouragement for anyone going through their own struggles.

“You are loved. You are needed. Your life has purpose. And you will make it through every season life puts you through … love you and hold you deeply.”

The supermodel later shared a close-up picture of herself crying, revealing that her latest flare-up has been particularly challenging.

“I can’t shake this one off,” she wrote, explaining that despite sleeping for 11 hours, she continued to fall asleep throughout the day. Took every protocol from any and every doctor I’ve seen. Still nothing helping,” she added, joking that she had now “diagnosed myself with 12 other things, so that’s good.”

She also revealed that simple daily tasks had become exhausting.

“I was out of breath walking to the kitchen. I don’t think there’s a singular brain cell in there working, and my last two are beefing with each other,” she wrote.

Still, she found a small victory in managing to get through one basic task.

“I took a shower without fainting tho… so again, if you know you know… that felt like a really big accomplishment for me today.”

It’s been a big year for reality TV star and content creator Vuyokazi Nciweni, and she has just added another win to the list.

The “Izingane Zes’thembu” star officially graduated from the University of South Africa (Unisa), marking the end of a journey that began in 2020.

Nciweni took to social media to share moments from her graduation ceremony in Cape Town, proudly celebrating an achievement she has been working towards for years.

Sharing pictures from her special day, including touching moments with her parents, the content creator reflected on the determination that carried her through her studies.

“She didn’t just earn a qualification, she proved that no setback is bigger than her determination. To the girl who never gave up, I’m so proud of you,” she wrote.

The graduation comes just months after Nciweni revealed that she had completed her qualification with an impressive 11 distinctions, an achievement that earned her praise from fans who have followed her journey on television and social media.

Nciweni also dedicated the achievement to her parents, who were by her side throughout her academic journey and during the ceremony.

A senior Kenyan government official has called for the series "The Polygamist" to be banned in Kenya and has even suggested possible legal action against Netflix, claiming the show is negatively influencing marriages and family life.

According to Kenyan outlet "Mpasho", Nairobi county chief officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, said, “This movie has destroyed people’s marriages. It should be banned because it is spoiling families and the minds of people.”

He further added, “A wife sees her husband with a female friend and immediately starts thinking he will become a polygamist. Women are enjoying it, but it is spoiling marriages and giving them wrong ideas.”

"I am not against polygamy because I have seen people who were born in polygamous families, and I am also a product of a polygamous family," he said.

He added that although he is personally married to one wife, he believes polygamy is not inherently wrong.

"The movie is exaggerating. It is making it look bad. It is making it look like anybody who is a polygamist is a womaniser and an animal, but polygamy is not bad," he said.

American rapper Isaiah Rashad is officially heading to South Africa for the first time, after being announced as the latest international headliner for Rocking the Daisies 2026. He will join British singer-songwriter Jorja Smith on the festival's growing lineup.

Actress Millie Bobby Brown recently opened up about the aftermath of wrapping up the beloved Netflix hit series “Stranger Things” and the mental toll that the ending of the series had on her.

Brown shared during a live recording of Josh Horowitz's "Happy Sad Confused" podcast on Wednesday, June 24, that she experienced a decline in her mental well-being throughout that time.

“I went into a little bit of a slight, slight depression. It was very hard for me. I would not have expected that coming off the show. I’m a very happy-go-lucky person,” the actress said.

During that time, Brown shared that she spent the month of January catching up with her co-stars to hash out any unresolved issues and make sure they would still be friends after the series ended.

“They probably thought I was crazy. I was like, ‘We’re still friends, right? Like you’re not gonna stop talking to me anymore?’

“I was like ‘I’m sorry if I ever upset you,’ and was just trying to mend anything,” she said.

The 22-year-old said that she has known her co-stars for a decade and practically saw them as her “siblings” and wanted to stay friends still.

She further added that when she joined the cast of “Stranger Things”, she was still very young, and it was a very emotional time to say goodbye to her co-stars.

“And no one will ever understand it. I started the show when I was 10, and this character was me, and these people were in my life more than my own family.

“I saw these people more than going home and eating dinner with my family. Saying goodbye to that after 10 years was a very, very emotional thing, and I’m going to miss Eleven more than anything,” she said.

At just 10-years-old, Brown portrayed the role of Eleven, also known as Jane Hopper, on “Stranger Things” for five seasons.

Eleven is a mysterious girl with powerful psychic abilities, including telekinesis, the ability to move objects with your mind and remote viewing.

In the finale, Eleven seemingly dies after sacrificing herself by staying behind in the Upside Down.

Many fans believe that she indeed died and that it is the end of Brown’s portrayal of the character.

Former actress and content creator Pam Andrews has made an unexpected plea to her followers after some people decided that her business WhatsApp line was the perfect place to send unsolicited nude pictures and explicit videos.

Taking to Instagram, the former “Rhythm City” star shared a humorous but firm message, asking people to stop sending inappropriate content to the number linked to her business.

For those who may not know, Andrews has been running a business that purchases catalytic converters from people across South Africa, with a dedicated WhatsApp line set up for enquiries and negotiations.

However, according to the actress, some users have had very different ideas about how the number should be used.

“So you guys know I have my business. If you didn’t know, my business is buying catalytic converters from people,” she explained.

“And then also attached to that is a WhatsApp phone number, and that is only meant to be for the catalytic converters. That is not my phone number.”

Andrews clarified that she does not personally manage the account, as one of her business partners handles the administrative side of the operation.

“My business partner has been doing this admin for me. He’s been showing me some of the messages that you guys have been sending. Oh my goodness. Why are you guys sending naked pictures?”

She revealed that some people had even sent explicit and intimate pictures.

“For me, it’s very funny, but you guys are traumatising my business partner. Stop it,” she said with a laugh.

It's been nine years since singer and songwriter Thabsie dropped her debut album "Songs About You," and now she is back with a new EP, "While You Wait".

A fitting title, "While You Wait," lays the foundation for Thabsie's soon-to-come sophomore album, under her independent label Song Bird Entertainment.

Known to be very intentional about her music releases and never rushing to release music, Thabsie explained to IOL that she doesn't think the timing ever feels right, but you just have to take the leap and hope everything will work out.

One of Mzansi's most talked-about couples, Nandipha (Queen Nandi) and Reverend Mlombi, are making a much-anticipated return to the screen with the second season of "Nandi & The Rev".

After season one, viewers were left with many questions regarding the couple’s dynamic and how they would navigate the challenges they faced, especially after the birth of their seventh child. 

This season, "Nandi & The Rev" are focusing on rebuilding after the storm, asking whether healing is truly possible when old wounds continue to resurface.

The Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill returns to Willard Beach in KwaDukuza from July 4 to 18, bringing a packed programme of sport, music, culture and community activities to the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.

Held under the theme Wave of Unity, the festival marks its 57th year and coincides with two major global sporting milestones, the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the 50th anniversary of the World Surf League World Tour.

Festival organiser Collette Bundy said this year's event promises one of the strongest line-ups yet, with activities catering for all ages and interests.

Among the new additions is the SeaHer Women's Surf Activation, a three-day programme focused on empowering women through surfing, wellness and ocean confidence. The initiative will offer participants opportunities to develop surf skills, mindset techniques and meaningful connections through shared experiences in and around the ocean.

Sport remains a major attraction, with highlights including the Surf & Turf Pros Tag Team challenge, which brings together surfing, soccer and rugby personalities on 16 July. Youth soccer development finals will also be staged during the festival, while FIFA World Cup fan zones will screen Bafana Bafana matches as well as the tournament's quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

The programme also includes the Ballito Skate Competition Presented by O’Neill and Red Bull, featuring top national skateboarders and local talent, as well as BMX activations, bike displays and aerial entertainment.

Community and environmental initiatives will form an important part of the festival. These include the Litter4Tokens recycling programme, environmental awareness campaigns led by WESSA, fundraising events supporting surf development projects and Youth Month activations held in partnership with KwaDukuza Municipality.

Tourism-focused experiences showcasing the KwaDukuza and iLembe region will also run throughout the festival.

Music fans can look forward to free Ballito Pro Music Concerts Presented by Corona on 16 and 17 July, featuring amapiano, Afro-tech, rock, pop and EDM performances. Additional entertainment includes sunset DJ sessions, a Battle of the DJs competition and a range of after-dark events.

Visitors will also have access to a variety of beach activities, including volleyball, soccer, yoga, Pilates, judo and touch rugby tournaments. Family-friendly attractions include children's entertainment programmes, art showcases and a retail village featuring food vendors, lifestyle brands and market experiences.

The Ballito Pro forms part of a broader partnership between KwaDukuza Municipality, the World Surf League, Surfing South Africa and public and private sector stakeholders aimed at promoting youth development, tourism growth and sustainable coastal activation.

The Red Mango Arts Festival is set to return to Sastri College in Durban from July 22 to 25 for its second edition, following the successful launch of the event last year.

Founded by acclaimed South African actor, playwright and director Rajesh Gopie, the festival is presented in partnership with Sastri College, Red Mango Creative Arts NPC and the Sastri Alumni Association.

The festival aims to create opportunities for artists, audiences and communities through theatre, music, storytelling, cultural dialogue and artistic collaboration.

This year's programme will feature theatre productions, music concerts, spoken word performances, heritage-focused events, youth development initiatives, industry discussions and international collaborations. The programme places a strong emphasis on contemporary South African storytelling, intercultural narratives and themes of humanity, identity, social justice and healing.

Programme highlights include Sydenham Lightie, Global Ballie by Kurt Egelhof, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama Letters of Suresh, and the launch of author Imraan Coovadia’s latest book, Enemy of the People.

Audiences can also look forward to Sufis, Mystics and Qawali, a music, poetry and storytelling concert, as well as performances by the Tshwane University of Technology group, which returns with Mama Mia. Other attractions include Tonya Koenderman’s Getting Old Disgracefully, a comedy evening featuring Jailoshni Naidoo and Friends, youth theatre productions, an open mic session, dance demonstrations, a magic show, line dancing, storytelling performances and a grand finale concert.

In addition to the performances, festivalgoers will have access to book sales, exhibitions, displays, refreshments and outdoor spaces designed for social interaction.

Building on the success of its inaugural edition, the festival will continue to focus on intergenerational participation and accessible community engagement. Schools and youth organisations will once again play a central role in the festival’s outreach efforts, reflecting its commitment to developing future artists and audiences.

The 2026 festival will also expand collaborations with local businesses, educational institutions, cultural organisations and international partners, further positioning Durban as a creative hub rooted in diversity, dialogue and artistic excellence.

Sastri College, located in Greyville near the historic Curries Fountain Stadium, has long been recognised as a significant educational institution and an important part of Durban’s social and cultural heritage.

“Red Mango is ultimately about people,” said Gopie.

“It is about artists being seen, communities reconnecting, young people discovering possibility through creativity, and Durban reclaiming its place as one of the great cultural cities of South Africa.”

“Scatterlings Music Festival”, an inaugural event that’s set to make its way to Johannesburg this August, bringing together some of South Africa’s biggest artists for a one-night celebration of music, culture and collaboration.

The event draws its name from Johnny Clegg’s iconic song “Scatterlings of Africa” and is the brainchild of Msaki and Jesse Clegg. It will see artists from different genres and generations sharing one stage, including Sjava, Sun-El Musician, Simmy, Muzi, Tresor, Zolani Mahola and Grammy Award winner Zakes Bantwini.

Speaking ahead of the event, Bantwini shared that the event represents more than just another performance date on the calendar.

According to the artist, one of the biggest highlights of the upcoming festival will be performing his interpretation of a Johnny Clegg classic. The song is yet to be revealed; however, it is set to drop as the next single from the "Scatterlings" album.

The song holds special significance as it pays tribute to the legacy of the late Johnny while introducing the music to a new generation. Artists such as J’Something have also been part of the project with their reimagined version of “Asimbonanga”. 

“I think I’m looking forward to really just performing the reinterpretation of the record that we did with Msaki,” he said.

“I want to see people’s response and how they are going to enjoy it live because most people obviously know the song, but they are not enjoying this version.”

Without approaching the song as a remix, Bantwini said he wanted to make it his own.

“It felt good because I really interpreted it as if this song was mine, I would have done it. So that’s exactly how I would have done the song. For me, I wasn’t making a remix, I was interpreting the song.”

The festival’s line-up is another reason he is excited.

“I think it’s one of the best line-ups this year. It’s a very interesting and very diverse line-up, totally diverse in terms of even the music itself and the audiences,” he said.

Bantwini added that some of the artists on the bill are people he rarely gets the opportunity to share a stage with.

“I don’t know the last time I was on a line-up with Sjava. I don’t know the last time I was on a line-up with Zolani. I’ve never been on a line-up with Jesse. This is going to be the first time.”

After more than two decades in the music industry, performing on some of the world’s biggest stages and building a catalogue of hits that continue to resonate across generations, he said there is still something special about coming home to perform for a South African audience.

He reflected on why South African crowds remain some of his favourites.

“Coming home is always special. South Africans are so expressive, you know? When they like something, you would hear them making some sort of chants and noise just to show appreciation.

“Whereas in some parts of the world, you may actually think that they are not enjoying themselves because they’ll just be quiet or they’ll just be dancing, but without giving you any response whatsoever.”

He laughed as he pointed out that South Africans tend to stand out even when they’re attending shows overseas.

“South Africa, we just don’t dance and keep quiet. We always bring the vibe. You always know if there’s a South African in the crowd, even when you’re performing overseas, because they don’t keep quiet even there,” Bantwini shared.

While Bantwini’s career has evolved significantly since hits such as “Clap Your Hands”, he credits much of his longevity to his mother.

Speaking of his relevance today as an artist in a forever-changing music industry, he attributes his success to his mother.

“I thought that music needed you to just be talented, but my mother was like, ‘No, no, no. You have to go to school and study this thing. If you say you like it, go study it.’”

He said formal music education completely changed how he approached his craft and gave him the tools to become independent as a creator.

“Going to school really shaped the way I approached music. It gave me the technical ability to interpret what is in my head. I wasn’t waiting for a pianist to play me a chord. I could play my own chord. I wasn’t waiting for a bass guitarist to play me a bass guitar. I could play on my own,” he said.

Beyond producing hits, Bantwini said one of his biggest achievements has been helping change perceptions around dance music. Many people assume dance music is only about having fun, but he believes it can be just as meaningful and powerful as any other genre.

“I think we’ve changed the perception that says dance music is only about irresponsible lyrics,” he said.

“I have shown people that this is also music that could serve you spiritually. It can also serve politically. It can also serve as a mirror into what is happening in society.”

He points to songs such as “Wena Baba” as examples of how dance music can carry deeper messages while still making people move.

Looking ahead, Bantwini has no plans of slowing down.

“I am still making music. I think I’m not going to stop making music,” he said.

Beyond music, he recently launched the Zakes Bantwini Foundation, a project that has been years in the making.

The foundation builds on work he has already been doing through an artist incubation programme in Durban, where young musicians are given access to resources, mentorship and studio time to help launch their careers.

“We take artists who are amazing artists, we give them shelter, we give them access into the studio for free for them to start their careers,” he explained.

Among the artists who have emerged from the programme are Karyendasoul and Maline Aura. Bantwini also revealed that he is expanding into sport through a new division within his company.

“Scatterlings Music Festival” is set to take place on August 1 at Huddle Park in Johannesburg. 

Lawrence Maleka is one of Mzansi's favourite actors and he is returning to Mzansi Magic screens in a new role on the channel's newest drama series "Critical But Stable".

Based on novelist Angela Makholwa's bestseller, "Critical But Stable" is a 13-episode drama series that follows the life of a struggling businessman, Duke, who ropes his friends into an insurance scam to save both his ailing wife and his failing business.

Maleka stars as Mzi on the drama series, a man who needs money to pay his son’s university fees and hides the secret that he can’t sexually satisfy his wife.

The SAFTA award-winning actor shared that he was drawn to "Critical But Stable" because it is based on Angela Makholwa’s book, which already had a strong following and reputation, and the cast.

"There was a lot of talent involved, and that’s always exciting as an actor because you’re constantly being challenged. And finally, Mzi was different from anything I’d done before, which made the opportunity even more appealing," said the actor.

Maleka explained that he appreciated the story's realism, focusing on ordinary people rather than superheroes or larger-than-life characters.

"I think that’s what will keep audiences invested because you can understand how these characters got themselves into these situations, even when you don’t agree with their choices."

Maleka enjoyed unpacking the layers to Mzi, and as he read the script, he got more curious about him.

He added that many people will relate to the realities of wanting to do better for the people they love. "The pressure might look different for different people, but that responsibility is something most of us understand.

"What I found interesting about Mzi is that his intentions are often good, but the decisions he makes don’t always lead him where he wants to go."

To prepare for the character, Maleka tried to understand who the person is beyond what’s on the page, spending time speaking to people, listening to different perspectives, and trying to grasp the emotional reality of what Mzi is dealing with.

Actress Motsoaledi Setumo stars as Lerato, Maleka's on-screen partner, for whom he has nothing but praise. To build chemistry, the two spent a lot of time together on set, having conversations and getting comfortable with each other as scene partners.

"Once that trust is there, the chemistry tends to develop naturally," he said.

"Critical But Stable" is also co-executive produced by Makholwa and produced by Barkers Media and is set to start airing on Sundays from July 26, 2026, on Channel 161 at 8.00pm.

Dr Mavis Mazhura wants women to stop fearing money and start using it as a tool to build the lives they want.

“The Trap Temptations” has been welcomed by many fans as a long-awaited reunion between Ruff, Emtee, Sjava and Saudi, but not everyone is impressed.

Music executive and “Music Pulse” co-host Nhlamulo “Nota” Baloyi has shared his thoughts on the collaborative album, arguing that the project sounds more like a Sjava album than a balanced effort from all four artists.

Released on Youth Day, the album marks a reunion for the “African Trap Movement” collaborators, who rose to prominence during their time at “Ambitiouz Entertainment”. The project sees the four artists reconnect years later after building successful solo careers of their own.

As part of “African Trap Movement”, Ruff, Sjava, Emtee and Saudi became known for bringing a uniquely local flavour to trap music, mixing each of their street narratives, soulful melodies and personal storytelling in a way that helped define an era of South African hip hop.

While fans have praised the chemistry between the artists and the nostalgia the album brings, Baloyi believes the album lacks enough individuality from some of its contributors.

Speaking about the album on the podcast, Baloyi said it reminded him more of Teargas than a trap project.

“They are recreating the Teargas vibes by joining up together. They sound like Teargas, I won’t lie. It’s like if Teargas did a trap album. Instead of ‘The Trap Temptations’, it should have been the Trap Teargas,” he said.

He went on to suggest that the album relies too heavily on Sjava’s familiar sound and creative direction.

“You don’t hear Emtee adding something new. What’s the difference between that album and Logan? Sjava’s on it. It’s the same sound, Ruff, same producer,” Baloyi said.

According to Baloyi, the album does not do enough to separate itself from previous projects associated with Sjava and producer Ruff. He believes the formula feels too familiar, making it difficult for the collaboration to stand out as something entirely new.

His comments have sparked debate among fans online, especially as many listeners have been celebrating the reunion of four artists who played a major role in shaping South Africa’s trap scene.

Ahead of the album’s release, the group described the project as a reflection of both their growth and their longstanding brotherhood.

“This album represents our brotherhood, and we are also trying to give our people a picture of how much we have grown musically as a collective,” Ruff previously said.

Sjava echoed a similar sentiment, saying the music carries the weight of their individual journeys and experiences over the years.

Baloyi’s criticism has divided fans, with some agreeing with the music executive while others continue to praise the project as one of the strongest local releases of the year, applauding the reunion of the former ATM collaborators.

The true-crime world is packed with stories of deception, but few are as deeply haunting as Netflix’s "Maternal Instinct".

Directed by Jessica Dimmock, this gripping documentary dives into the unthinkable 2020 case of Taylor Parker, a woman whose desperate, fake pregnancy spiralled into a horrifying act of violence against 21-year-old Reagan Simmons-Hancock in East Texas.

It’s a masterclass in slow-burning tension that explores just how far someone will go to protect a lie and the devastating path of destruction left behind.

What makes "Maternal Instinct" so gripping is how it tracks a runaway train of deception.

The first half of the documentary systematically takes apart Taylor's massive web of lies.

For the average viewer, the sheer scale of her fraud is so hard to believe, and the documentary does an incredible job of showing how one lie demanded a bunch more just to keep it afloat.

After having a full hysterectomy years prior, which made it physically impossible for her to ever carry a child, Taylor managed to convince her boyfriend, Wade Griffin, her family and her entire community that she was pregnant with a miracle baby. 

The documentary relies heavily on real proof like text messages, social media posts and recorded phone calls to show how she built this illusion day by day. 

Her lie was a highly organised, full-time operation. 

We watch her buy fake ultrasound photos online, adjust her belly padding so she appears to grow larger each week, learn in-depth details of how to perform a C-section, and even throw an elaborate gender-reveal party to cement the fantasy in everyone's minds. 

Some knew, but no one really said anything. And those who tried were quickly shut down.  The film also highlights how Taylor brilliantly weaponised the Covid-19 pandemic to her advantage.

By using the strict hospital visitor restrictions of 2020 as an easy excuse, she kept her boyfriend from ever visiting the doctor or ultrasound room with her.

Where "Maternal Instinct" truly shines is in its refusal to let the killer completely hijack the spotlight.

Too often in modern true-crime documentaries, the camera obsesses over the criminal, turning them into a dark celebrity while the victim is forgotten. 

Dimmock completely avoids. Through heartbreaking interviews with Reagan’s mother, her husband, her sister and her closest friends, the film paints a vibrant portrait of the young victim.

We see Reagan not just as a target, but as a deeply loving young mom to her 3-year-old daughter. She was someone full of life and kindness, who genuinely thought she was helping an acquaintance when she let Taylor into her home under the guise of wedding photography.

By focusing so heavily on who Reagan was, the documentary ensures that when the ultimate tragedy strikes, the loss feels deeply personal to the audience.

The final minutes of the film track the terrifying moment where Taylor’s lies finally ran out and turned deadly. As her "due date" surpassed ten months, her boyfriend began demanding to see real hospital paperwork.

Cornered and desperate, Taylor chose violence over being caught out. The tension becomes almost unbearable as the timeline counts down to October 9, 2020.

The documentary covers the brutal attack inside Reagan's home, where Taylor brutally assaulted Reagan, stabbing her over 100 times. She then used a scalpel to forcibly remove the unborn baby from her belly.

Shockingly, Reagan’s daughter was present in the home during the attack and was later found hiding in one of the bedrooms upstairs. 

Hours later, a Texas state trooper found Taylor driving erratically with the stolen, unalive infant on her lap, claiming she had just given birth on the side of the road.

However, after spending so much time on how the crime happened, the documentary rushes through the why.

While the documentary delivers the facts of the trial, including the harrowing testimony from the paramedics and the eventual death row conviction, it lacks any deep psychological analysis.

Viewers are left longing for more commentary from criminal psychologists or behavioural analysts who could analyse the inner workings of Taylor's mind.

Why did she choose violence over confession when cornered? How does a person completely disconnect from reality to the point of committing an act so barbaric? Why did no one confront her and just pull out that fake baby bump?

The documentary misses the chance to truly understand the monster at the centre of the story.

Despite this, "Maternal Instinct" is still an incredibly memorable and haunting documentary.

It stands as a sobering cautionary tale about the dark depths of human deception, and ultimately, it serves as a beautiful tribute to the memory of Reagan.

“We see individuals from different backgrounds and cultures sharing their experiences and perspectives, which makes for a very interesting season,” he explained.

Mseleku added that the cultural diversity featured this season is what sets it apart from previous instalments.

After spending years helping families navigate these conversations, Mseleku says he has learnt that no two marriages are the same.

“I have learned that while people’s desires and goals may be similar, their reasons for wanting to be in a marriage or a polygamous relationship can be very different. Everyone’s journey is unique.”

One of the biggest hurdles men face, he believes, is introducing the idea of polygamy to their wives in a society where monogamy remains the norm.

“Many men find it difficult to introduce the idea of taking another wife because society has practised monogamous marriage for a very long time.”

He also pointed out that conversations around polygamy are increasingly shifting away from morality and focusing more on financial realities.

“Today, the conversation is more focused on affordability and whether a person can provide security and stability for their family. Many women want reassurance that they will be cared for and supported.”

Despite often being viewed as a practice of older generations, Mseleku says season five challenged some of his own assumptions.

“I have been surprised by how both younger and older people aspire to pursue polygamous relationships. It shows that these conversations are relevant across different generations.”

As emotions flare between families throughout the season, Mseleku says his role remains the same. To try and create a space where everyone can express their feelings honestly and be heard, even when emotions are running high.

One lesson that stood out to him while filming was the importance of communication.

“I was touched by the fact that many men struggle to express their feelings openly, while some women find it difficult to accept their reasons and emotions. Those moments reminded me how important communication is in any relationship,” he said.

When asked about misconceptions surrounding polygamy, Mseleku said many people still view it through a negative lens.

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that polygamy is a backward practice. I think some of the people who came before us did not always do justice to the concept, which has influenced how it is viewed today.”

Regardless of whether a marriage is monogamous or polygamous, Mseleku maintains that honesty, open communication and mutual understanding serve as the essential foundations for a successful relationship.

As someone who has become synonymous with conversations around polygamy in South Africa, Mseleku says he feels honoured by the role he has played.

“I feel humbled and honoured to be associated with this conversation. It has not been an easy journey, and there have been challenges along the way. We have made mistakes, but the vision has always remained the same, and I am grateful to have played a role in opening up these discussions,” he concluded.

Thapelo Maseko has become one of the faces of South African football history after scoring the winner that sent Bafana Bafana into the Fifa World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

His story is not only about football but also about discipline, family and a steady rise from Sebokeng in the Vaal.

Raised in Eatonside in Sebokeng, the 22-year-old winger grew up in a home where his father worked as a truck driver and sacrificed heavily to support his early football development in the Vaal.

After returning from Afcon, he made his first major personal decision. He bought a family home in Kempton Park for his parents and brothers before focusing on himself and later moving into his own apartment.

After a difficult spell at Mamelodi Sundowns and a severe hamstring injury during the 2023 Afcon, he lost his place in the team and briefly spent time in the reserves.

He later rebuilt his career after a loan move to AEL Limassol in Cyprus, where he has since thrived and settled well.

In the 2026 Fifa World Cup match against South Korea, Maseko scored the 63rd-minute winning goal. He latched onto a cross-box pass from Tshepang Moremi, took two composed touches and finished with a left-footed strike at the near post.

The victory secured South Africa's second place in Group A with four points, behind group winners Mexico.

It also marked the country’s first-ever progression beyond the group stage, following previous attempts in 1998, 2002 and 2010.

Maseko was named Man of the Match, becoming the first South African player to win the award at the tournament.

Bafana Bafana will now face Canada at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in Round 32 on Sunday, June 28.

That was the feeling shared across the country on Thursday morning, after Bafana Bafana made history by qualifying for the Fifa World Cup knockout stages for the first time ever.

South Africans from all walks of life celebrated the landmark achievement, with celebrities, influencers and public figures flooding social media with messages of pride and excitement.

The historic moment came after a tense 1-0 victory over South Korea at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico. Cyprus-based winger Thapelo Maseko became the nation's hero when he found the back of the net in the 63rd minute after a well-timed assist from Tshepang Moremi.

The win completed an impressive turnaround for coach Hugo Broos and his squad. After suffering a 2-0 defeat to group leaders Mexico in their opening match, South Africa bounced back to finish second in Group A with four points and secure a place in the Round of 32.

As the final whistle blew, social media exploded.

Rapper Cassper Nyovest could barely contain his excitement.

As artists around the world paid tribute to Clive Davis following his death at 94, South African actress Melanie du Bois surprised many by stepping into the political arena while Tyla found herself at the centre of a debate about whether her performances still carry the same spark that helped launch her global rise. 

Here’s what had the celebrity world talking this week.

1. Clive Davis dies at 94, music stars pay tribute

The music industry is mourning the loss of legendary record executive Clive Davis, who died at the age of 94.

Davis helped launch and shape the careers of some of music’s biggest names, including Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson and Usher.

Following news of his death, tributes poured in from artists who credited him with changing their lives and careers. Hudson described Davis as family, while Springsteen reflected on the impact the music mogul had on his early career after signing him to Columbia Records.

While many celebrated his influence on the music industry, some social media users revisited controversies associated with his legacy, including criticism that followed his decision to continue hosting a pre-Grammy event shortly after Houston died in 2012.

2. Melanie du Bois enters politics

Actress Melanie du Bois is taking on a new challenge after being announced as deputy leader of the People’s Prosperity Movement (PPM).

The former "7de Laan" and "Arendsvlei" actress is expected to contest a ward seat in Cape Town during the 2026 municipal elections. 

Although politics is not traditionally what many associate with her public image, Du Bois has long spoken about community upliftment, empowerment and social issues through her motivational speaking engagements.

3. Tyla’s Morocco performance divides fans

Tyla delivered a crowd-pleasing performance at the Mawazine Festival in Morocco, but much of the conversation afterwards centred on her stage presence rather than her setlist.

A growing number of fans argued that the singer’s performances no longer feature the choreography and energy that helped establish her as one of the most exciting new stars in music. Others called for more audience interaction and bigger production moments.

At the same time, many supporters reminded critics that Tyla is still recovering from the back injury that forced her to cancel several major performances in 2024.

4. Romeo Beckham lands first acting role

Beckham is adding actor to his growing résumé.

The 23-year-old model is set to make his acting debut in "Forty Love", a queer romance directed by Pierre-Ange Carlotti.

According to reports, the film follows a tennis star whose life is turned upside down when a rival challenges not only his athletic abilities but also his understanding of love and identity.

Beckham has spent the past few years building a successful modelling career after stepping away from football and tennis.

The upcoming film marks his first major acting role and another career milestone for the son of David and Victoria Beckham.

5. Sizwe Dhlomo and Cassper Nyovest defend Ma-E

Veteran rapper Ma-E found himself at the centre of a social media debate after TikTok creator Xcalibar labelled him one of the artists who had “fallen off” and criticised both his music and style.

The comments prompted a response from Ma-E during an appearance on the Podcast and Chill Network’s Kasi Jam podcast, where he confronted the creator over the remarks.

The debate spread across social media, with many fans defending the rapper’s contribution to South African hip-hop. Broadcaster Sizwe Dhlomo was among those who spoke out, reminding younger audiences of Ma-E’s impact on the genre.

Cassper Nyovest also weighed in, describing Ma-E as a legend and praising the role he and his peers played in pushing South African hip-hop forward.

6. Muni Long opens up about life-saving double lung transplant

Grammy-winning singer Muni Long revealed that a serious health battle forced her to leave Brandy and Monica’s "The Boy Is Mine" tour early last year. 

Speaking to Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America", Long shared that what initially seemed like a health setback turned into a life-threatening situation that ultimately required a double lung transplant.

The singer admitted she was initially concerned about how the procedure could affect her voice, but ultimately chose her health and her family first.

Now six months post-surgery, Long says she is doing well and hopes her story encourages others to prioritise their health and rest when needed.

7. Ice Cube and Nia Long reunite for Are We There Yet? sequel

Nostalgia was in full force this week after news broke that Ice Cube and Nia Long will return for a third instalment of the Are We There Yet? franchise.

The new film, titled "Are They Gone Yet?", will see the pair reprise their roles as Nick and Suzanne Persons, this time navigating the challenges of grandparenthood.

8. Credo V Daniels becomes the internet’s latest meme

South African singer Credo V Daniels has found himself at the centre of a viral TikTok trend after a live performance of his song “Ngafa” sparked widespread discussion and criticism online.

What started as criticism turned into jokes, with social media users recreating a missed high note from the performance and sharing their own exaggerated versions. The trend has spread rapidly across TikTok, making Daniels one of the week’s most talked-about local artists.

Following the backlash, his management team acknowledged that technical issues affected the performance and accepted responsibility.

9. Zee Nxumalo celebrates Forbes Africa recognition

Amapiano star Zee Nxumalo is celebrating after being named on the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 list for 2026.

The annual list recognises young Africans making an impact across business, sport, entertainment and innovation. Sharing the news on social media, the singer reflected on her journey and dedicated the achievement to the younger version of herself who dared to dream big.

The recognition marks another major milestone for the 23-year-old, who has also been nominated for numerous Basadi in Music Awards and leads the pack with six nominations in multiple categories, including Artist of the Year, Amapiano Artist of the Year, Best Styled Artist of the Year, Best Female Feature of the Year and Collaborations of the Year.

10. Makhadzi’s trip to the DRC takes an unexpected turn

Makhadzi experienced first-hand just how popular she has become across the continent when a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo ended with an e-hailing vehicle being damaged by excited fans.

The singer shared footage showing crowds surrounding the car after supporters recognised her while she was travelling to a market. In the commotion, the vehicle’s bumper and side mirror were torn off.

Despite the chaos, Makhadzi remained calm and apologised to the driver, even helping him load the damaged bumper into the vehicle.

Known Associates Entertainment is bringing “Dear Sis Dolly”, a heartwarming South African family comedy-drama, to cinemas nationwide. 

“Dear Sis Dolly” is directed by filmmaker Twiggy Matiwana and written by Makganwana Mokgalong.

The story is brought to life by an ensemble cast of South African screen royalty led by award-winning actress Didintle Khunou, S’thandiwe Kgoroge, who plays Drum Magazine’s Editor in Chief, bestie Dineo Langa, chief rival Natasha Thahane, nerdish IT guy Brighton Ngoma and the legendary Jerry Mofokeng-Makhetha and Abigail Kubeka, amongst others.

Khunou stars as Khethiwe, a quirky, idealistic, and overachieving psychologist in her late 20s, who enters the competition to become Drum Magazine’s new agony aunt, Sis Dolly. 

Speaking to IOL, Khunou shed light on the character that many people across the country once envisioned themselves as.

“I think the character and the brand of the character is so iconic and legendary that I didn't want to focus on that; I wanted to focus on the impact that Sis Dolly has in the community.

“I wanted to focus on bringing the humanity and the soul of this character forth. I wanted to make people quite aware of the fact that this is just a girl who wants to uplift and empower her community, and she is very ambitious, full of potential. 

“But in her pursuit of doing that, she comes across challenges that made her realise that she has sacrificed too much of herself to give back.”

Khunou shared that the lesson with Khethiwe is the importance of filling up your own cup, learning how to lead, take the reins and lead your own life.

“If you want to be able to lead a community and lead others into a space of healing, you have to do that for yourself. It starts at home.

Khethiwe enters the Sis Dolly competition to save her community mental health centre, Legae, from closure. 

Mental health has become a big hot topic across the country, and TV programmes have become a big way of bringing awareness to the topic that can be deemed sensitive.

Khunou explained that people are focused on trying to survive life as opposed to wanting to open up about their feelings, which now brings the challenge of how to inspire people to look at mental health differently.

“As much as we think mental health is a hot topic, I still think people in our black communities disregard it and dismiss it,” said the actress.

“I think the film contributes towards inspiring people to look into maybe jobs or vocations or passions or things that don't just impact themselves.

“I just hope that the movie contributes towards a great sense of building not just awareness about mental health, but a support system and an ecosystem where people become sources of refuge for one another.”

The movie debuting on the big screen is a way to bring people together and back to the cinema. With the convenience of streaming and the cost of living, cinema seats are not as full as they once were, unless it’s a major blockbuster.

Khunou expressed that soon, people are going to realise how important it is to have experiences, and that will drive them back into the cinema.

“The same reason why it's important to go to a concert, a music concert, is the same reason that you would go to the cinema. To experience a body of work that was created to show you an aspect of the South African experience that you might not have access to or that you might not have known before. 

“I think it's all good and well to support stuff that's on TV, South African stories that are on TV. But the cinema is becoming a dying art and a dying medium, and I think we shouldn't let that happen.”

Khunou argues that the conversation around the cost of watching a movie at the cinema is often seen as an excuse, considering how many people spend money on alcohol every weekend. And maybe a culture of South Africans going to the cinema, going to the theatre, going to concerts, should be created.

“I think if we also bring the cinema to the people through events. There are so many innovative ways to bring our artwork as creators to the people.”

“Dear Sis Dolly” is a love letter to community, self-love and the enduring cultural legacy of Drum Magazine's iconic agony aunt column.

The film is produced by Tshepiso Chikapa Phiri, Moroba Nkawe and Joel Chikapa Phiri of Known Associates Entertainment, with advertising legend Peter Vundla lending his vision and experience as Executive Producer.

“Dear Sis Dolly” took five years to get to the big screen. Production began in 2021 and was shot in 2024. They encountered all sorts of challenges, from technical to finding the right writer and also financial, which is a big challenge in film.

The film opens at Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas across South Africa on Friday, July 3, 2026.

Research suggests that stress responses can remain active beyond the original trigger, influencing mood, attention and physical state. That is one reason anxiety can feel so persistent: the body may keep registering a threat even after the immediate moment has passed.

Reading Brandon Fairweather’s The Hell Inside Our Heads felt like recognition. It captures distress not as a fleeting mood but as a cycle that grips both mind and body — something I know too well. Fairweather’s honesty matters because it gives language to what many people feel but struggle to name. His battles with congenital heart defects, open‑heart surgery, strokes and cancer force him to confront fragility head‑on. When he writes about inner turmoil, it resonates because it’s a lived experience, not a theory.

The Everyday Weight of Anxiety

Anxiety doesn’t only arrive in dramatic crises; it threads itself through ordinary life. It seeps into routines, leaving the body tense long after the moment has passed. These effects show that anxiety is not just emotional; it has real physiological consequences. The quality of interactions can also influence how intense anxiety feels, with supportive contexts often easing the strain.

Anxiety Disorders in Everyday Life

Unlike ordinary stress or nervousness, these conditions are long‑lasting, often overwhelming and frequently accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heart, restlessness or difficulty concentrating. They are common, treatable and can include generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias and social anxiety disorder.

Each person experiences them differently — some signs may be present, others not — and the lists we use are never exhaustive.

Physical signs may include sweating, trembling, muscle tension, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea or fatigue. For instance, during a panic attack, someone might feel their chest tighten, their vision blur and believe they are about to collapse in a public space.

Cognitive signs often involve excessive worry, rumination, racing thoughts or a sense of impending danger. A person with generalised anxiety might spend hours replaying conversations, convinced they said something wrong or worry constantly about their children’s safety even when they are at home.

Behavioural signs include avoidance, rituals, restlessness, or withdrawal. Someone with social anxiety might avoid speaking in meetings or decline invitations to gatherings, while a person with a phobia could refuse to travel by plane or avoid driving over bridges.

The consequences ripple outward. These disorders can sap joy from hobbies, make work or school overwhelming and intrude even on leisure time. A once‑avid reader may find it impossible to focus on a book, or a student may freeze during exams despite knowing the material. They may strain relationships, limit new opportunities or lead to depression when the constant stress wears people down.

Naming these experiences through both research and lived accounts helps make the invisible visible.

Tools to Lean On

• Breathing as Anchor: calming the body when panic rises.

• Mindfulness as Lens: noticing thoughts without judgment.

• Reframing as Strength: Stoicism reminds me I cannot control events, only my response. When facing an interview or financial meeting, I remind myself of past resilience and the challenges I’ve already faced. That shift turns dread into capability.

• Routine as Rhythm: journaling, walking or small rituals create stability when days feel chaotic. Routine doesn’t erase anxiety, but it gives life a structure that resists collapse.

• Connection as Relief: Sometimes, the most healing act is being heard. Reaching out to friends or family lightens the burden and reminds me that anxiety is not carried alone. Support doesn’t need to fix; it only needs to listen.

Anxiety can also narrow the future. It makes ordinary choices feel heavier, turns small setbacks into verdicts and can make hope feel risky.

Resilience

Anxiety can shrink the world, but life pushes back in small, steady ways. A genuine conversation, a workplace that values honesty and a community that welcomes openness are the threads that keep humanity intact. They don’t erase strain, but they bring movement, reminding us that life continues even when pressure builds.

Resilience is not about pretending the weight is gone. It is about learning how to carry it without being crushed by it.

What happens when one of South Africa’s most beloved songs meets a new generation of listeners?

Singer and songwriter J’Something has unveiled the official music video for his reimagined version of “Asimbonanga", the iconic song first performed by Johnny Clegg and Savuka.

The release follows strong support for the single from radio stations and media platforms across the country. 

The visuals add another layer to a song that has carried deep meaning for South Africans for decades. The track is the first release from “Scatterlings", J’Something’s upcoming album dedicated to celebrating the music and legacy of the late Clegg.

More than a cover, the project is a personal tribute to an artist whose music helped shape South Africa’s cultural identity.

“Some songs are bigger than music,” said J’Something.

“Reimagining 'Asimbonanga' was one of the greatest creative honours of my life. We spent countless hours searching for the right balance between bringing something new and respecting everything that makes the song so timeless. In the end, the song showed us the way.”

He added that the recording process became a celebration of Clegg’s enduring influence.

“These studio sessions were filled with joy, curiosity, and so much love for Johnny Clegg’s legacy. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it.”

Originally released during apartheid, “Asimbonanga" became one of the defining songs of the struggle against racial oppression.

At a time when Nelson Mandela's name was banned from public mention, the song boldly called for his release and became a symbol of hope and resistance.

Taking on a song with such history is no small task, but J’Something approaches it with care. Rather than completely reinventing the classic, he preserves its emotional core while introducing a fresh sound that speaks to younger audiences.

For J’Something, the project is also deeply personal.

“Growing up in South Africa, Johnny Clegg wasn’t just a musician; he was a voice of truth, unity and courage,” he said.

“I had the privilege of meeting him a few times and feel absolutely blessed to be releasing this as a single.”

He continued: “His music shaped how so many of us understood our identity and our history. To be able to reinterpret 'Asimbonanga' is something I don’t take lightly. It’s an honour beyond words to celebrate a man whose work meant so much to me and to be part of a project that carries his legacy forward for a new generation.”

With the release of both the single and its visuals, fans now have a glimpse of what to expect from “Scatterlings" and a reminder that great songs never stop finding new voices. 

The Jungle Book

This play is one of those timeless stories that sits in everyone’s childhood memory bank, full of adventure, heart and life lessons wrapped in the wild.

It follows Mowgli, a brave young girl raised by wolves, as she steps into a wild world that is equal parts beautiful and dangerous.

With Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther by her side, she learns the rules of the jungle while figuring out how to survive with curiosity and everything in between.

The journey is filled with memorable encounters, each creature adding heart and a bit of trouble along the way. But as danger creeps closer and the pull of the human world gets stronger, Mowgli is forced to make a tough choice about where she truly belongs.

After a successful run in Cape Town, “The Royal Countess Zingara” has arrived at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

Designer Richard Griffin has reimagined the iconic Spiegeltent as a large, ochre-hued royal enclosure. 

Instead of replicating a specific time or place, the venue’s design is inspired by the Countess’s fictional travels through Morocco, the Sahara, Malta, and Mali. The aesthetic combines Byzantine and North African influences to create a unique, mirrored pavilion.

The production showcases a diverse ensemble of global and local talent, featuring roller-skating and hand-to-hand acrobatics from Jamie and Beata, alongside former Cirque du Soleil aerial cradle experts Juan Pablo Palacios and Victoria Perez Iacono of Argentina.

Also taking the stage are Las Vegas-based Rola Bola artist Axel Perez and Johannesburg acrobat Samantha Kotze, with Cape Town vocalists Megan Spencer and The Clorettes providing the musical heart of the performance.

Guests can expect a four-course dinner paired with a variety of acrobatics, live music, and theatrical performances.

Also playing beneath the mirrored canopy of the Spiegeltent is “La Dolce Royal”, a separate production focused on human connection, celebration and spectacle.

Directed by Craig and Valentina Leo, the production of "La Dolce Royal" employs unique narrative guides to facilitate the audience's journey:

Constellations

British playwright Nick Payne's mesmerising work, "Constellations", has arrived for its highly anticipated Johannesburg run.

Brought to life by the How Now Brown Cow production house and directed by industry luminary Jay Pather, the piece showcases the formidable talents of Mwenya Kabwe and Mark Elderkin.

Honouring its evocative title, the play unfolds as a captivating romance explored through the lens of parallel universes.

Central to this mesmerising work are two individuals as they traverse the complexities of human connection, grief, and the hands of destiny.

Through a kaleidoscope of moments, the play explores the profound question: what if every version of our existence occurred simultaneously, and could love survive such a vast expanse?

Pather added: “We have all experienced an ‘if only’ moment. What if I had done something differently, said

something else? Would it have worked out better?

“‘Constellations’ is a remarkable play that evokes this human frailty through compelling text, sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-wrenching, that builds steadily with the inevitability of ancient ritual and Greek drama.”

Who owns a song once it has been written and recorded? It is a question that many adults struggle to answer, so it is no surprise that most children have little understanding of copyright and creative ownership.

Music rights consultant, author and entrepreneur Sakhele Mzalazala wants to change that through his new book, “What is Copyright? Our Song”.

The animated educational publication introduces children to the basics of copyright, music rights and creative ownership through storytelling and characters they can relate to.

Aimed at music students, primary school learners, young adults and adults who know little about industry rights, the book tackles a topic that is often seen as complicated and turns it into something accessible and enjoyable.

Mzalazala believes that music rights education should start long before aspiring artists enter the industry.

"This book is more than just a publication; it is a movement," he said.

"We cannot continue to wait until artists are adults before teaching them about their rights. The future belongs to our children, and it is time for them to understand the value of creativity and ownership from an early age.

"In fact, it is time for our children to teach us and help protect the creative industries for generations to come."

For years, many artists have entered the music business without fully understanding how to protect their work. Mzalazala notes that early education is the key to changing that reality.

Published independently through SM Communications, the book has been completed and is ready for printing and distribution. Written in a simple and interactive style, it encourages children to do more than just read.

Young readers are invited to act out the characters and engage with the lessons in a way that makes learning memorable.

Adding a personal touch, the animated characters featured in the book are inspired by Mzalazala's own children and their friends.

"The goal was to create something children could see themselves in," he explained.

“What is Copyright? Our Song” is the first title in a planned educational series focused on the creative industry.

Future books will explore topics such as publishing, artist management, royalties, the music business, creative entrepreneurship and intellectual property rights.

Mzalazala hopes that the series will eventually reach schools across Africa and beyond. While the project addresses challenges faced by African creatives, he believes that the lack of music rights education is a global issue.

The long-term vision is to provide schools, libraries, arts institutions and families with practical resources that help children understand their rights and the value of their creativity.

With the manuscript complete and ready for distribution, SM Communications is also seeking partners to help bring the book into classrooms and communities.

"Our children are creative. They deserve to know the value of what they create," said Mzalazala.

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Muni Long has revealed the devastating health battle that forced her to leave Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” tour early last year.

Speaking in a recent interview with Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America", Long shared that what initially seemed like a health setback turned into a life-threatening situation that ultimately required a double lung transplant.

The singer, who joined Brandy and Monica on their highly anticipated “The Boy Is Mine” tour alongside Kelly Rowland, admitted that she probably should not have gone on the road in the first place.

“I should have never taken that tour. But there was so much going on in my life where I had to do it,” she said.

Long’s health struggles did not begin with the tour. The “Hrs & Hrs” singer was diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and has been open over the years about the challenges that come with living with the autoimmune disease.

She explained that even factors such as cold weather can trigger flare-ups, making life on the road especially demanding.

During the Northeast leg of the tour, Long said her condition worsened after she developed pneumonia. Despite stepping away to focus on her health, she eventually tried to return to the stage.

Looking back, she admitted her body was already warning her that something was seriously wrong.

“I went back, and I think, maybe five or six dates in, it was just like … I couldn’t even get out of bed to make my call time for a stage,” she recalled.

It was a turning point that eventually led to her leaving the tour altogether, a decision that may have ultimately saved her life.

After leaving the tour and returning home for Thanksgiving, Long said her condition worsened dramatically. She later woke up in the hospital and was faced with a decision she never expected to make.

“I said, ‘How long do I have to live?’ And they go, ‘A week’. My jaw dropped. Literally. I was like, ‘That’s rude.’ But they were kind of like, ‘This is not a joke. You need to make a choice. You can either go to hospice, or you can get these lungs.’”

The prospect of a double lung transplant was especially frightening for someone whose career depends on her voice. Long admitted that she initially worried about what the procedure could mean for her future as a singer.

“The ego and the vanity was just like, ‘But what about my voice? What’s going to happen?’ But then I look at my son, and I think about how much more life that I have to live. Quality of life was first. I can’t sing if I’m not here.”

The singer says she is now doing much better.

“I’m doing fabulous. I’m six months post-op. Tomorrow is my last appointment for all the things. No symptoms. Asymptomatic. No infections. None of that.”

Long also revealed that she underwent vocal surgery following the transplant and is continuing with follow-up appointments as part of her recovery. Looking back on the experience, the “Made for Me” hitmaker hopes others learn from what she went through.

“Don’t put yourself on the back burner for everyone else. You need to focus on yourself. You need to pour into yourself. Don’t be afraid to say no. Rest if you need to. That is a radical thing – for us to rest.”

The mid-2000s family comedy boom is officially knocking on our doors again.

Nearly two decades after they first braved the chaotic waters of blended family life, Ice Cube and Nia Long are officially locked in to reprise their iconic roles as Nick and Suzanne Persons.

Skydance Sports has officially acquired the rights to the third instalment of the blockbuster franchise, "Are They Gone Yet?"

The announcement marks a significant milestone for fans of the original films, which defined a generation of family-oriented cinema.

The production will be co-produced by Broken Road and Ice Cube’s own production banner, CubeVision, alongside producers Todd Garner and Jeff Kwatinetz.

The plot

If you thought Nick Persons had his hands full dealing with two mischievous children in a ruined Lincoln Navigator or trying to manage a suburban fixer-upper with a rogue contractor, wait until you see what’s next.

The upcoming sequel shifts the family dynamic into a brand-new generational phase. Written by screenwriters Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana, the story fast-forwards to the present day, dropping Nick and Suzanne straight into grandparenthood.

While specific plot points are under wraps, the title heavily implies that the couple's quiet retirement years are being thoroughly hijacked by a new generation of high-energy kids.

The "Are We There Yet?" universe has quietly been a massive commercial juggernaut, amassing over $1.4 billion for the first two films.

For Ice Cube, returning to the world of Nick is less about repeating the past and more about leaning into a legacy that grew alongside its audience. 

"We built something special with this franchise. Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick's got grandkids. Time flies. Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership."

Long, fresh off her heavily praised performance in the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael", was equally quick to celebrate the reunion online, keeping her message short, sweet and perfectly hyped for the fanbase, stating: "This should be fun."

The biggest mystery currently dominating the internet is whether the original kids, Aleisha Allen (Lindsey) and Philip Daniel Bolden (Kevin), will return to play the exhausted, adult versions of their characters.

Okay, why did I think "Voicemails for Isabelle" was going to be a romcom? No seriously.

I pressed play, expecting something light. Something cute. Something that would give me a few laughs, a few swoon-worthy moments and then send me on my way.

Instead, I spent the better part of two hours crying at least once every 10 minutes and questioning why nobody prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster I had just willingly climbed aboard.

That's not to say the film isn't funny. It is. There are genuinely charming moments scattered throughout and enough humour to stop the story from becoming unbearably heavy. But what completely caught me off guard was just how much heart this film has.

Written and directed by Leah McKendrick, the film follows Jill, played by Zoey Deutch, who copes with the devastating loss of her sister Isabelle by leaving voicemails on her phone. 

However, the number now belongs to Wes, played by Nick Robinson, a stranger who slowly becomes invested in the woman behind the messages. It is a premise that could have easily felt gimmicky, but somehow turns into a surprisingly moving story about grief, healing and finding connection when you least expect it.

The film feels less like a romantic comedy and more like a love letter to grief, healing and the people we carry with us long after they're gone.

The story follows Jill as she leaves voicemails for her late sister Isabelle, continuing a conversation that death interrupted. It sounds simple enough on paper, but the way the film unfolds had me hooked from the start.

Every voicemail feels intimate. Every message feels like something that was never meant for anyone else's ears. As a viewer, you almost feel guilty listening in, and yet you can't look away.

What surprised me most was how invested I became in Isabelle despite barely knowing her. The film somehow manages to make her presence feel enormous even when she's not physically there. By the end, I felt like I had lost someone, too.

And then there's the romance.

Love stories still exist.

I don't know what else to tell you.

The chemistry between the leads is absolutely insane. Not the forced kind where you're constantly being told two people belong together. The believable kind. The kind that sneaks up on you until suddenly you're smiling at your screen like a fool.

What I appreciated most was that the romance never overshadowed the emotional core of the story. It wasn't there to "fix" anyone. It simply existed alongside the grief, the healing and the messiness of life.

That balance is incredibly difficult to get right, and yet the film pulls it off beautifully.

The performances are another reason this story works so well. Every emotional beat landed for me. Every awkward moment felt natural. Every tear felt earned.

There wasn't a single point where I felt manipulated into feeling something. The emotions arrived naturally and then hit me like a truck.

Also, can we please discuss the soundtrack? Impeccable.

There are films where the music simply fills space, and then there are films where every song feels carefully chosen to stab you directly in the heart. This is one of those films.

More than once, I found myself sitting through a scene thinking, "Whoever picked this song deserves a raise."

What I loved most about "Voicemails for Isabelle" is that it reminded me that romance doesn't always have to be grand gestures and perfect endings. Sometimes it's about connection. Sometimes it's about finding someone who understands the parts of you that are still hurting.

I walked into this film expecting a sweet romcom. I walked out feeling emotionally wrecked, weirdly hopeful and deeply grateful that stories like this still get made. 

One of the clearest lessons is how people don’t “finish” grieving on a timeline. The story leans into the idea that loss doesn’t disappear just because life moves forward. It reshapes itself.

In Jill’s case, those voicemails become a kind of survival mechanism, showing how people sometimes keep speaking to those they’ve lost because silence feels worse than imagination.

There’s something quietly honest in that - the idea that healing isn’t about letting go completely, but learning how to carry the person differently.

Caregivers are often expected to keep going quietly in the background, showing up, holding everything together and giving endlessly to the people they love, even when it comes at a cost to themselves. 

In Holding On, Letting Go: A Caregiver’s Memoir of Love, Loss, and Dream-Woven Reflections, author Sherri-Lee Lawler brings that often unseen experience into focus, using her own journey caring for her mother during her battle with cancer to highlight the emotional labour, sacrifice and loneliness that can define the role.

While the memoir is deeply personal, it also speaks to a wider truth about caregiving: those who are looking after loved ones are often so consumed with giving that they neglect themselves in the process. For Lawler, that was one of the clearest lessons to emerge from caring for her mother.

“In giving, you also have to give to yourself as well. I wasn’t doing that much because you put yourself on the back burner and forget that you need to cater to yourself as well, to be able to be the best version of yourself,” she said.

That reflection sits at the heart of the book. Holding On, Letting Go does not shy away from the reality that caregiving can demand everything from a person emotionally, mentally and physically, while offering very little room for rest or recovery. It is an act of love, but also one that can leave caregivers depleted and unseen.

At the same time, Lawler says the experience revealed the depth of her love for her mother and the strength she had to find within herself to keep going.

“It taught me how much love I really have for her, and it taught me resilience,” she said.

That resilience, however, did not make the journey any less painful. One of the most difficult parts of caregiving, Lawler explains, was confronting how much was outside of her control. 

In the book, the idea of “letting go” becomes one of its most powerful themes, not as giving up, but as accepting the limits of what love and effort can change.

“Letting go, I had to learn that it is an act of love. As a caregiver, you are out of control, and sometimes there are things you can’t control,” she said.

For Lawler, that meant accepting the things no amount of care, hope, or determination could alter.

“I couldn’t control the diagnosis or the progression of the disease nor my mother’s emotions,” she said.

Instead, she had to learn to release the expectation that doing everything possible would necessarily lead to the outcome she wanted most.

“Letting go of the control of the outcome, knowing you are doing your best even though outcomes can be not what you expected, and the hardest and last part, which is letting go of the person,” she explained.

It is a painful truth that many caregivers will recognise. When someone you love is ill, care is so often rooted in hope that treatment will work, that things will improve, that your effort will somehow change the ending. 

The reality that love and devotion do not always guarantee healing is one of the most devastating parts of the caregiving experience, and one that Lawler addresses with honesty in her memoir.

Another thread running through the book is the loneliness of caregiving. Even when surrounded by doctors, family members and daily responsibilities, the role can be deeply isolating. Much of the emotional burden is carried privately, and caregivers are often left to process fear, exhaustion and anticipatory grief on their own.

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to make its presence felt in the music industry, changing the way songs are created, produced and distributed. 

While some musicians see AI as a tool that can help speed up certain parts of the creative process, others remain concerned about what it means for originality, ownership and the value of human creativity.

The conversation has been especially heated in South Africa, where artists such as Nanette and Filah Lah Lah have publicly spoken out against the growing use of AI in music. 

Nanette previously argued that AI is no substitute for human creativity, while Filah Lah Lah questioned whether musicians are being told their years of dedication and craft are being reduced to something that can be replicated by technology.

The new revelation has added another layer to the debate.

According to Doreen Mokoena, founder and CEO of Cybersec Clinique, an audit of major artificial intelligence training datasets found that the work of hundreds of South African artists appears in publicly documented datasets used to develop AI music systems.

Sharing the findings on X, Mokoena wrote: “The biggest export South Africa never authorised may be its culture.

"Our audit of major AI training datasets identified dozens of South African artists appearing across publicly documented training corpora used to develop the next generation of AI music systems.

“As artists, rights holders, and policymakers begin to examine the scale of this practice, it may prove to be one of the most significant data laundering controversies the global music industry has ever faced.”

The findings came after music industry executive Lindiwe Dhlamini pointed to a searchable database published by "The Atlantic", which allows users to search music that was reportedly used by technology companies to train generative AI models.

According to Cybrsec Clinique’s audit, more than 200 South African artists across genres, including Amapiano, Kwaito, Maskandi and Gqom, were identified in the datasets.

“More than 200 South African artists across Amapiano, Kwaito, Maskandi, Gqom & more were sampled. To my shock, even Mashamplane and Mawlies didn’t survive.

“AI companies are looting our culture without consent or pay. Colonial data theft in our lifetime will not be accepted. Urgent policy reform is needed,” Mokoena added.

Amapiano heavyweight Kabza De Small was found to have the biggest presence across the audited AI training datasets, with frequent collaborator DJ Maphorisa also ranking among the most-used South African artists.

Gospel favourites Spirit of Praise and rapper Nasty C were also among the names that appeared prominently in the findings, showing just how wide-ranging the datasets are across different genres.

The audit suggests that music from these artists was used to help train AI systems that can create similar-sounding songs from a simple text prompt. 

Other familiar names identified include Cassper Nyovest, Kelvin Momo, Emtee and Sjava, among hundreds of South African artists whose work was reportedly included in the datasets.

Madonna is still a material girl living in a material world, and this time the material in question is a Hollywood budget that never quite matched her vision.

In the summer 2026 issue of "Interview Magazine", the pop icon disclosed that her long-anticipated biopic has been cancelled. This decision follows a disagreement with Universal Studios regarding creative direction and production expenses.

The project, which had drawn major attention for years and was set to star “Ozark" actress Julia Garner, never made it past development.

Madonna said that she invested years into shaping the film herself.

“I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting,” she said. 

Despite that effort, she said that disagreements with the studio became a turning point.

“We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget, because I needed to have an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget. You know what I mean?”

The film had already cleared major industry hurdles in 2021 when Universal Pictures won a competitive auction to secure the rights to the biopic.

Early plans suggested the story would follow Madonna’s journey from suburban Detroit to her rise in 1980s New York and conclude around her “Ray of Light” era in 1998.

But as development continued, Madonna said that the creative vision began to clash with financial expectations. She even explored alternative filming locations to reduce costs.

“I found a way to make it for less money in Serbia, but I don’t think they were into the idea of, I don’t know,” she said.

She also pushed back against concerns about her involvement in production decisions.

“Maybe they just didn’t believe in me.”

At one point, she said that the studio questioned the practicality of her ideas, including time spent abroad during production.

“They said I wouldn’t stay in Serbia more than four days.”

Madonna said that she was surprised by the comment and responded directly to the studio’s doubts.

“I said, ‘Did you read the script? My whole life has been survival. I’m not going there for a holiday'.”

When the project ultimately stalled, she described being left in limbo. She later explored turning the biopic into a streaming series, with Netflix showing interest, but the transition came with complications.

Neither Universal Studios nor Netflix have made any public comments on the matter.

She explained that she could not use her original script without buying it back from Universal at a high cost.

“That’s just the way it goes,” she said. “It was an extortionist’s price, even though I wrote it.”

The shift to television also proved challenging creatively, as she struggled to find the right team to carry the project forward.

“I started trying to understand how making a series would work. It’s a very different process,” she said. “I couldn’t find a showrunner.”

After months of development meetings, Madonna stepped away from the project entirely, choosing to focus on other creative work.

“I was like, good thing I have another job because I need to work, I need to create. I need to do what I was put on this earth to do.”

Despite the setback, Madonna remains firmly in her next era.

She is preparing to release her 15th studio album, “Confessions II”, on July 3, a sequel to her 2005 hit "Confessions on a Dance Floor”, reuniting with producer Stuart Price for a return to electronic music.

She is also set to headline the first-ever Super Bowl-style halftime show at the 2026 Fifa World Cup final on July 19, alongside Shakira and BTS, marking one of the biggest global performances of her career.

The 23-year-old will star in the film directed by fashion photographer Pierre-Ange Carlotti, and it also marks Carlotti’s directorial debut as well.

According to “Variety”, the French film follows the story of Sacha Gallo, a tennis superstar who has been training with his father to win a major trophy in Paris.

However, the arrival of a charismatic new rival (portrayed by Beckham) challenges Gallo more than his athletic abilities.

The arrival forces the tennis star to reconsider everything he thought he understood about competition, ambition and himself.

The synopsis reads: “For the first time, he faces an opponent of an entirely different nature - love.”

Beckham will star alongside Paul Kircher, Guillaume Canet, Benjamin Voisin and Catherine Deneuve.

The producer of the film, Marc-Olivier Selignac, described the project as a “sensual, romantic and deeply moving romantic fable and coming-of-age story” that explores the pressures of elite athletics and the emotions that often remain hidden beneath the surface.

Beckham is widely recognised as a model as he has been doing so for several years now. He also pursued football and tennis in the past, but left both in 2024 to become a full-time model.

Since his career pivot, he has walked on multiple international runways for famous brands such as Balenciaga, Versace and Burberry. 

Beckham also appears to be experiencing a series of firsts lately; in addition to his film debut, he made his first appearance at the Met Gala earlier this year as a guest of Burberry.

The news of the model’s acting debut comes following the ongoing feud between his older brother, Brooklyn and the rest of his family. 

Just last week, Brooklyn took a jab at his family during a World Cup ad for DoorDash, and he ended up receiving a lot of backlash from the Beckham fans who let it be known that the ad was “disappointing”.

“Forty Love” is scheduled to be released on November 25 in France, with the international release plans yet to be announced.

Tyla may have had thousands of fans singing along during her recent performance at the Mawazine Festival in Rabat, Morocco, but social media has been focused on something else entirely.

Videos from the show have sparked a fresh debate among her fans, the “Tygers”, with many arguing that the “Push 2 Start” singer’s performances no longer have the same energy and choreography that first helped make her a standout star.

Another fan, @incessantyap, felt the singer should interact more with audiences during her shows.

Some fans even drew comparisons to Zara Larsson, who collaborated with Tyla on “She Did It Again”, a single from her upcoming sophomore album “A*Pop”.

Larsson was the first to perform the song live despite only being featured on the song. Tyla only recently added the song to her setlist during her Morocco performance, something some fans have also questioned.

“Zara has been in the industry longer than Tyla, and she still gives it her all when she performs. I’m not sure what’s been going on with Tyla lately; maybe the lack of performances has made her a bit rusty, but we all know she has incredible potential,” wrote @TylaaBanks.

What some fans appear to be overlooking, however, is that Tyla has previously spoken openly about the back injury that forced her to cancel several major appearances in 2024, including her highly anticipated Coachella debut.

“For the past year, I’ve been silently suffering from an injury that has tragically worsened. Despite consulting doctors and specialists with high hopes, the pain and severity of the situation have only escalated,” she shared at the time.

The injury became serious enough that doctors advised her to refrain from continuing with scheduled performances, raising questions about how much physical strain she can realistically place on her body while touring then. 

She has also expressed wanting to take things easy and not rush the healing process while also seeing the injury as a way to slow down as she enjoys her stardom.

So while fans are asking for the fire, choreography and energy they fell in love with at the start of her career, perhaps Tyla is still figuring out how to give audiences that experience while also taking care of her body. 

After all, a back injury isn’t something you simply bounce back from overnight.

That vision sits at the heart of “Through The Fire", the latest EP from KwaZulu-Natal-born gqom duo The Incredibles. 

The six-track project is more than a collection of songs. It is a statement of intent from two artists determined to help shape the next chapter of one of South Africa’s most influential sounds.

Released at a time when gqom continues to evolve and find new audiences, “Through The Fire” places The Incredibles at the centre of the conversation.

The project introduces what they call “new age gqom”, a style that honours the genre’s roots while welcoming fresh influences and ideas.

For the duo, this direction was never a sudden decision. It has been part of their thinking since the beginning.

“We knew from the moment that we started our musical journey,” they explained. “At the time, gqom was not in a good space before making its return and we knew that we had to be innovative and push boundaries if we wanted to stand out.”

That desire to innovate came from their own experience as listeners. While gqom remained close to their hearts, they felt that there was room for growth and experimentation within the genre.

“We felt the genre lacked the fusion of different sounds as well as collaborations across genres and with a wider range of artists,” they said. “Through this EP, we have embraced those elements and brought them into our interpretation of gqom.”

The result is a project that celebrates where gqom comes from while exploring where it could go next.

Across the six tracks, listeners are introduced to a sound that blends traditional gqom percussion with melodic songwriting, vocal-driven moments and influences from Bacardi music and rap.

Yet despite the experimentation, the duo were careful not to lose sight of the genre’s identity.

“We always make sure the core of the music remains gqom. From there, we introduce elements from other genres in a way that complements the sound without taking away from its identity.”

That balance is one of the strengths of “Through The Fire”. Rather than forcing different styles together, The Incredibles allow each influence to find its place naturally.

The project feels connected from start to finish, creating a listening experience that moves between dancefloor energy and more melodic moments without losing momentum.

The duo expanded gqom’s possibilities, proving that it can exist comfortably in clubs, on streaming platforms and in broader music conversations.

The Incredibles have also earned respect for their commitment to the genre. While trends shifted and some artists explored other directions, they remained dedicated to the sound that first inspired them.

“It only felt right to stay true to our roots and the music we genuinely love,” they said. “We would have been lying to ourselves if we claimed to love any other genre more than gqom.”

That loyalty has become part of their identity. It is also a key reason why the EP feels genuine. Collaboration plays a major role throughout the EP.

Interestingly, the collaborations were not the result of a detailed master plan.

“The collaborations happened quite organically. There was no strict plan for features. We would invite artists into the studio, create together and their placement on each song would happen naturally based on what felt right for the music.”

That relaxed creative process helped create an atmosphere where ideas could develop freely. The duo believes that the chemistry between artists became one of the defining features of the project.

“The synergy of the featured artists was important. A lot of the songs came together quickly, but everything connected naturally. That energy carried through into the final versions.”

“This is a project that everyone from different places can listen to. We are not just building a fan base. We are building an Incredible Family.”

It is an ambitious goal, but one that aligns with the duo’s plans for the future.

A supporting tour is currently in development alongside a dedicated merchandise line and curated live experiences inspired by the EP.

Art with heart: The Maria McCloy mural unveiling

Keep your eyes peeled for a beautiful new addition to the walls of Constitution Hill.

The festival will be unveiling a special mural honouring Maria McCloy, a celebrated DJ, designer, publicist and true South African creative icon.

McCloy died at a Johannesburg hospital following heart failure on May 12. 

She had a deep connection with Constitution Hill, even performing on the Basha stage last year.

The mural is designed by the globally recognised local artist Lazi Mathebula. It will sit proudly right next to the legendary Bra Hugh Masekela's mural on Joubert Street.

The Sounds of Freedom music festival kicks off at the People’s Park from 10am on Saturday, and the lineup is absolutely stacked.

Recently, my wife and I decided to revisit season three of Jack Ryan, the fast-paced, complicated espionage series featuring John Krasinski as the title character. But the plot of the show is not really what struck me. Although I’ll touch on it more later, it’s how I used AI to fill in the gaps as I tried to follow the intricate storyline.

We had watched this season before, but for whatever reason — I can’t really remember — we never made it through all the episodes.

As someone with ADHD, a show like this can become very difficult to follow, with characters, motives and incidents coming at you at breakneck pace.

In fact, I’m quite jealous of how my wife manages to scroll Instagram while watching the show and still knows exactly what’s going on at any given moment.

Sadly, even with my eyes peeled and watching attentively, I still found myself completely lost at sea — much like one of the scientists Jack Ryan tries to rescue at the beginning of the season.

When this happens, I inevitably ask my wife a series of questions such as: “Who’s that guy? He’s with them? Oh, I thought he wasn’t with them. That’s the German ambassador? Oh, it’s the Czech minister? Was that old man the young guy in the 1980s who killed all those nuclear scientists at the beginning?”

As you can imagine, my wife can quickly grow tired of inane questions like these.

And that’s when it struck me. Before we moved on to episode six, I suggested we take a break so I could read up a bit on the plot and get us on the same page.

How ChatGPT Helped Me Understand My Favourite TV Series

Instead of Googling it or hopping over to IMDb, I decided to have a chat with ChatGPT.

I explained my problem and it gave me a brilliant rundown of everything that had happened up to that point in the series. It provided a big-picture summary, a list of the key players with descriptions, and brief plot summaries covering the first four episodes.

Of course, episode five — the one that had left me floundering — was where the big twist arrived. Once again, ChatGPT explained it clearly and concisely.

Within a few minutes, I finally understood who everyone was, what their motivations were and why certain events mattered.

I can now forge ahead with confidence, knowing I can resume season three with a solid understanding of what’s already happened and, hopefully, retain what I watch next.

And if not, I’ll probably just have another chat with my AI app.

TikTok creators have found their latest inside joke, and unfortunately for Credo V Daniels, he is at the centre of it.

The singer has been trending across social media following criticism of his recent live performances, with one particular moment from a performance of his song “Ngafa” now being turned into a viral meme.

TikTok creators are doing everything but letting the moment fade; most have been recreating the high note that Daniels missed on stage during his recent performance at Hard Rock Cafe, deliberately cracking their voices in exaggerated ways to imitate the now-viral clip. 

The trend has spread all over TikTok, with users posting their own versions while poking fun at the singer’s performance. It all started as criticism at first, but due to the sense of humour of the Mzansi nation, it has now evolved into a full-blown social media joke.

The backlash comes after Daniels faced scrutiny over the gap between his live vocals and the polished sound heard on his recorded music. 

Some social media users have even accused the rising star of relying heavily on AI-assisted production, arguing that his live performances do not match what listeners hear on streaming platforms.

Following the criticism, Daniels’ management team, Curato Music, released a statement addressing the conversation around his album launch performance. 

“Over the past few days, we have taken time to reflect on Credo V Daniels’ 'Still Where We Were' Album Launch and the conversations that have followed. The team acknowledged the criticism and said they had listened carefully to the feedback,” the statement read.

“At the same time, we have listened carefully to the criticism. Some of it has been difficult to hear, but it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge it.”

According to Curato Music, technical difficulties contributed to the performance issues that many fans highlighted online.

“There were technical challenges at the beginning of Credo’s performance that affected the experience for many attendees.”

“As Curato Music, we take full responsibility for that. We understand that people arrived expecting a certain standard, and where we fell short, we owe those supporters honesty and accountability. The criticism around Daniels’ vocals has also reignited conversations about his use of AI in music. While some social media users have questioned whether artificial intelligence plays too big a role in his sound, the artist has previously been open about how he uses the technology.

Speaking on Kaya 959’s “The Best T in the City with T-Bose”, Daniels described AI as a tool rather than a replacement for creativity. 

“I think it’s a tool. If you can use it, use it. But not fully, like just prompt and then let it go. Create first,” he said.

Daniels explained that he mainly uses AI to assist with backing vocals and choir arrangements when needed.

“As I use it, I only use it for backing vocals, the choirs. When I needed a choir, people didn’t show up. I asked them to come over, ‘Let’s do this thing!’ They didn’t show.”

Hollywood stars Sherri Shepherd and Taraji P. Henson have joined the growing list of viewers who simply cannot look away.

And when someone like Henson is singing a show's praises, people pay attention.

This is an actress who has spent decades building one of Hollywood’s most respected careers.

From her Oscar-nominated performance in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" to becoming a television powerhouse as Cookie Lyon in "Empire", Henson knows a thing or two about compelling storytelling.

Because Cookie does not scare easily. That woman has survived betrayal, prison, family drama and a husband, Lucious Lyon, played by Terrence Howard - who was doing the absolute most in "Empire".

Mpofu-Walsh and AKA were a part of a hip hop trio called Entity back in the mid 2000s. 

They established the group when they were still in Grade 11 attending St John’s College, when they were just 17 years old.

They went on to release their only album, “The Royal School of Hip-Hop”, in 2005, which got  nominated for a Kora All Africa Music Award in the hip hop category.

The trio parted ways in 2006 and later in 2009, AKA ventured into a solo career, which led to him becoming one of the most influential rappers in Africa.

The death of legendary music executive Clive Davis has sparked an outpouring of tributes from artists whose careers he helped shape, while others on social media have used the moment to revisit controversies that followed him throughout his decades-long career.

Davis, the former head of Columbia Records and the founder of Arista Records and J Records, died at the age of 94. According to ABC News, he passed away on Monday in Manhattan, New York, from an “age-related illness” while “surrounded by his family and loved ones.”

In a statement released by his family, they reflected on both his influence on music and the role he played in their lives.

“To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives. Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, Davis played a key role in launching and guiding the careers of some of the biggest names in music, including Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Patti Smith, Maroon 5, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Luther Vandross.

Many of the artists whose careers were shaped by Davis took to social media to pay tribute to the music executive. Hudson was among the first to share her heartbreak following the news.

Springsteen remembered the music executive as someone who believed in him from the very beginning.

“Over here on E Street, we mourn the death of the great record man and close friend, Clive Davis. At 22 years old, he changed my life when he signed me to Columbia Records,” Springsteen wrote. “He treated me with the same respect and kindness as a 22-year-old nobody as he did after all my success. A great man. All our prayers and love.”

Keys also paid tribute by sharing a collage of photos of herself and Davis on Instagram Stories alongside a dove and purple heart emoji on her Instagram story.

Patti Smith also thanked Davis for supporting her throughout her career.

Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons, producer Jermaine Dupri and DJ Diplo were among other music industry figures who publicly shared their condolences. However, not everyone remembered Davis positively.

As tributes poured in, some social media users revisited criticisms of the veteran executive and questioned the legacy he leaves behind.

Another user, @_romeko, referenced the backlash Davis faced in 2012 after Houston’s death.

While her divorce battle with estranged husband Mnqobi “Shota” Shoba continues to make headlines, Phumeza Mdabe appears to be focusing her energy elsewhere.

In a video circulating on social media, Mdabe shared a heartfelt message about life, legacy and the importance of kindness, revealing that despite the challenges she is facing, she has found a sense of peace.

“Guys, I’m not gonna lie. Life is lifing. Life is lifing,” she said.

“But right now, I find myself in a moment where I’ve blocked everything out, and I’m happy, and I’m at peace, and I’m with people I love.”

The media personality went on to share a question that had been weighing on her mind.

Speaking about her children, Mdabe said she hopes they remember her as a loving and present mother.

The emotional reflection comes months after Mdabe’s marriage to musician Shota came to an end.

According to “Sunday World”, Mdabe initiated divorce proceedings in July 2025, after accusing Shota of adultery as well as emotional and psychological abuse.

The couple ended their marriage after 11 years together.

The legal battle has continued beyond the separation. According to “Buzz Life News”, Mdabe is allegedly seeking R65,000 in spousal maintenance and R22,000 in child support.

The publication reported that Shota has challenged the maintenance request, claiming that he is currently unemployed and relies on close friends for financial support when necessary.

However, Mdabe has reportedly disputed those claims.

As per reports, court papers allege that Shota continues to earn substantial income through his entertainment industry work and other business ventures, including his involvement in DJ Black Coffee’s touring business.

The publication further reported that Mdabe’s court documents claim Shoba’s businesses generated close to R2 million between May and September 2025, with bank statements allegedly reflecting earnings exceeding R300K per month.

Their split became public in September 2025, when reports about the divorce first surfaced.

There are books you read, and there are books that read you back. This is how Jet Li’s memoir Beyond Life and Death: The Way of True Freedom landed for me.

I don't need a celebrity to tell me what to do. I'm Buddhist. I live with spirituality. I already know about pain, about letting go about finding something deeper than the chase. But Li's words resonated anyway.

What strikes me most is his grandmother. Before he was born, she told his mother this child would bring fortune to the family. And he did. Born into extreme poverty in Beijing with four siblings raised by a single mother after his father died when he was two, he fought his way to become the youngest national martial arts champion in Chinese history at twelve years old. He dominated opponents twice his size. Poverty drove him forward. 

That hunger carried him from Beijing to the global stage.

At nineteen, Shaolin Temple was released and made him famous across Asia. Hong Kong followed with Once Upon a Time in China, Hero, Fearless. Hollywood came later with Romeo Must Die, The One, Unleashed and Lethal Weapon 4.

Li became one of the first internationally renowned movie stars from China. A monthly salary of just 100 dollars once brought him pure joy. Eventually, he came to see that material possessions and the need for external validation were only temporary.

The Tsunami

At the height of his Hollywood career, everything changed. In 2004, he was 41, vacationing in the Maldives with his wife Nina and their two young daughters when the tsunami hit without warning. He thought the unusually large waves were rough surf until seawater rapidly engulfed the beach resort. He scooped up his older daughter and asked the babysitter to carry the younger one as the surge climbed past his knees, then his hips, then his neck. He hoisted his daughter onto his shoulders just as another wave crashed over them, sweeping the babysitter and his one-year-old more than twenty feet away.

He was choking on seawater, screaming for help, realising the distance between life and death was only inches. The water came up to just below his nose. They were inches from death. When the waters receded, he discovered his forearms shredded by debris. He found himself stranded for hours in a flooded hotel lobby alongside roughly 200 guests, frantic over his still-missing wife. The family was eventually reunited.

After that near-death encounter, he turned inward, deepening his study of Tibetan Buddhism and dedicating his life to philanthropy, though he was at the height of his Hollywood career. Great masters showed him a path toward being free beyond the free, a state he continues to learn and practice daily.

He writes about pain that doesn't go away, decades of it. His spine deteriorated. His muscles atrophied. He battled hyperthyroidism for a decade, making every movement difficult. South African author, entrepreneur and mental health advocate Kalene Oliver is celebrating a major milestone following the official launch of her book, “She’s a Hot Mess”.

The launch took place at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, Cape Town, on June 13, bringing together readers, supporters and friends for an event that marked the beginning of a new chapter in Oliver’s journey. 

Taking to Instagram after the event, Oliver shared her excitement and gratitude with followers.

She thanked everyone who attended the event, purchased a copy of the book and supported her along the way.

Writing the book was not always easy.

Broadcaster Sizwe Dhlomo has come to Ma-E’s defence after the veteran rapper found himself at the centre of a heated debate over his contribution to South African hip hop.

The conversation started after TikTok content creator Xcalibar listed rappers he felt had fallen off in one of his viral videos. 

Ma-E came in at number four and the TikTokker did not hold back, describing the rapper’s music as “trash”.

He also criticised the way he dresses and emphasised that there’s nothing the rapper is doing for the industry and that he did well by “leaving”.

The comments eventually reached Ma-E, who addressed them during an appearance on Podcast and Chill Network’s “Kasi Jam” podcast.

Known for his work as a member of “Teargas”, “CashTime Fam” and for solo projects such as “Township Counsellor”, Ma-E confronted Xcalibar directly about the remarks. 

The discussion shifted from music criticism to a broader conversation about respect and legacy within the industry.

During the exchange, Ma-E repeatedly asked Xcalibar to repeat everything he said about him online, making it clear that he took issue not only with the criticism itself but also with how it was delivered.

Xcalibar doubled down on his infamous commentary and didn’t take his words back, saying his content is rooted in personal opinion.

The exchange has since divided social media users.

Some felt Ma-E was justified in defending his name and reminding the younger generation of the contributions he has made to South African hip hop. 

“That's a super legend there, one of the greatest hip hop artists to have a massive impact ekasi and beyond. Time makes people forget,” said X user @MathenjwaCyril.

Others argued that Xcalibar was simply expressing an opinion in the same way many content creators do online.

@TerenceTaoSA commented: “I love Ma-E, easily in my top 8 SA hip hop artists. He speaks to me, I relate. But I don't believe the media scene needs policing. The young kids must get off what they want to get off their chest. Us older dudes can speak up for our acts. But no one must silence or caution any1.”

As the debate gained traction, other industry peers such as Dhlomo and Cassper Nyovest weighed in.

Dhlomo took to social media to defend the rapper’s legacy.

“I’ll say this, some of you young dudes treat the humble OGs with so much disrespect, simply because they don’t beat their chests about their accomplishments. Ma-E is a legend. Don’t let his calm demeanour mislead you,” he said.

The “Baby Girl” hitmaker shared a similar view.

Ma-E is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of South African hip hop. As part of Teargas alongside Ntukza and K.O, the group delivered several hits, including “Chance”, before he went on to establish a successful solo career.

“The Polygamist” is easily one of the biggest talking points on television right now, in taxis, at work, in group chats, even at that very important church gathering where someone is explaining a scene nobody asked for.

And because South Africans never just watch anything in peace, the show has now jumped straight into music culture.

A fan-made track inspired by the series is making the rounds and it carries that signature sound.

Given the public fallout between the two artists over the past few months, the announcement immediately had tongues wagging with speculations that the pair may finally be putting their differences aside.

While neither Speedsta nor Blxckie has publicly addressed the status of their relationship, and don't follow each other on social media, fans wasted no time pointing out that the booking could signal a reconciliation after months of tension between the two camps.

As the debate continued, Speedsta reportedly later clarified that former podcast collaborator Okayswisher had played a role in pushing narratives that further fuelled the tension between him and Blxckie.

Since then, things appeared to cool down publicly, although there had been little indication that the pair would work together again anytime soon. That is why Speedsta’s latest news took many by surprise.

After a long time of silence, fans were greeted with the news that Blxckie would be taking centre stage at “Hip Hop Floor”, one of Speedsta’s most recognisable platforms.

The event is a premium monthly South African hip-hop event and cultural movement curated by Speedsta. 

Created as a dedicated and safe space for local hip-hop lovers, the platform celebrates the core pillars of the culture through live sets from Speedsta and a line-up of special guests and friends.

The reaction online was immediate, with many welcoming what appears to be a positive step forward.

Argentine television presenter Florencia Peña has resigned from her role at Luzu TV after incorrectly announcing live on air that Jorge Messi, the father of football superstar Lionel Messi, had died.

The incident unfolded during the 2026 Fifa World Cup shortly after Argentina’s opening group stage victory.

The false report quickly spread across social media, sparking confusion and concern among football fans around the world. 

The controversy came after Lionel delivered a standout performance in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria, scoring a hat trick and leading his side to an impressive start to the tournament.

Following the match, Lionel appeared emotional and revealed that he had been dealing with what he described as “difficult days” due to personal matters unrelated to football.

Those comments led to widespread speculation online. During an episode of “El Show del Verano”, Peña addressed the rumours and made a shocking announcement.

“I don't want to bring bad news, but Messi's father has just passed away. It was sudden. In the middle of the World Cup,” she said on air.

She went on to suggest that the situation could force Lionel to leave the tournament and abandon Argentina’s hopes of defending their World Cup title.

Within minutes, clips of the broadcast were circulating online. Fans reacted with disbelief as the claim spread rapidly across multiple platforms.

According to the statement, the focus should remain on Jorge’s health rather than speculation and rumours.

As criticism mounted, Peña took to social media to apologise and announce her departure from Luzu TV.

“I apologise to the Messi family. I am deeply ashamed to have been involved in this mistake,” she wrote.

Peña explained that the information had been presented to her during the live broadcast as a verified fact by members of the production team.

“I have to clarify that this false information was given to me live on air as if it had been checked by the show's production team, and I trusted it.”

Despite that explanation, she accepted responsibility for repeating the claim.

“Even so, I take responsibility for being part of the mistake, and that is why I decided to step aside and end my participation in Luzu. I apologise again from the heart. I was wrong.”

According to the organisation, public voting is now open and supporters can vote for their preferred contestants through the official Miss South Africa platforms. The public vote will contribute to determining which contestants advance further in the competition.

The annual pageant continues to position itself as a platform that celebrates leadership, ambition, community impact and personal achievement, with contestants expected to demonstrate qualities beyond beauty throughout the competition.

The unveiling of the Top 24 has generated excitement among pageant fans, with social media already abuzz as supporters rally behind contestants from their respective provinces and communities.

As voting gets underway, anticipation is expected to build ahead of the announcement of the Top 12, bringing the country one step closer to crowning the next Miss South Africa.

King Charles III has reportedly extended an olive branch to his youngest son, Prince Harry, by offering accommodation at a royal residence and assistance with security arrangements during the Duke of Sussex's upcoming visit to the United Kingdom.

According to reports, the 77-year-old monarch, who continues to undergo cancer treatment, has invited Harry, 41, along with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, 44, and their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, to stay at a royal property while they are in Britain between July 6 and 10.

The visit is expected to centre around Harry's charitable commitments, including an event marking one year until the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

Should Meghan and the children accompany Harry, it would mark Archie and Lilibet's first visit to Britain in four years.

The reported offer comes amid Harry's long-running dispute with the UK government over security arrangements following his decision to step back from royal duties and relocate to California with Meghan in 2020.

Security has remained a key concern for the Duke of Sussex, who recently lost a legal challenge relating to taxpayer-funded police protection while visiting the UK. Harry has previously stated that he could not safely bring his family to Britain without what he considers adequate security measures.

The trip is set to conclude with an event celebrating the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027. Founded by Harry in 2014, the Games remain one of the projects most closely associated with his public life and charitable work.

Neither Buckingham Palace nor representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have publicly commented on the reported accommodation offer.

The pregnancy announcement comes following one of Hathaway's busiest periods as ashe has recently been promoting “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “Mother Mary” with some of her  upcoming projects including roles on “The Odyssey” and “Verity.”

Hathaway has previously spoken about how becoming a mother transformed her life.

In previous interviews, she has said motherhood made her feel more grounded and it made her gain a stronger sense of purpose.

The actress has also been candid about experiencing fertility challenges, including 

when announcing her second pregnancy in 2019.

During the time, she acknowledged that conception had not been "a straight line" and expressed support for others experiencing infertility.

Filmmakers from Africa, the Middle East and Asia have until June 30 to submit their work for the third edition of the Hollywood African Cinema Connection (HACC) film festival.

Organisers said the upcoming edition will expand its focus beyond film screenings by introducing new funding and industry development opportunities through a partnership with the African Film DAO.

According to HACC, selected filmmakers may be considered for investment, co-production and distribution opportunities aimed at supporting the development and wider reach of their projects.

The festival said the investment opportunities would be linked to the African Film DAO's tokenised funding model, while co-production opportunities would connect filmmakers with studios, production companies and industry partners. Distribution opportunities are intended to help filmmakers secure audiences beyond the festival circuit.

HACC said the initiative is aimed at addressing longstanding challenges facing filmmakers in the Global South, including limited access to funding, infrastructure and distribution networks.

The Hollywood African Cinema Connection describes itself as a platform focused on promoting African, Asian, and Middle Eastern cinema internationally through film exhibition and industry development opportunities.

Submissions for the 2026 festival edition close on June 30.

Abba So-lutely Fabulous!

This local production is a Father’s Day special filled with music and comedy, which is suitable for the whole family.

The play features a talented trio of husband and wife team of Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert, alongside award-winning Durban-based singer and entertainer, Marion Loudon.

This immersive audio-visual rock ‘n roll tribute show will be split into two sections. The first half celebrates Elvis Presley (performed by Andrea Giglio), while the second half pays tribute to foundational rock revolution icons backed by a live 5-piece band.

The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) is celebrating the 15th edition of Fête de la Musique Joburg in the City of Gold.

As “Married at First Sight Mzansi” prepares to return for its third season, viewers can expect another group of hopeful singles to take a leap of faith and marry strangers in the search for lasting love.

The hit reality series returns to Mzansi Magic on July 5 and will once again see relationship experts tasked with matching couples before they meet for the very first time at the altar.

One of the experts returning for the new season is relationship specialist Thabang Mashigo, who says her decision to come back was simple.

“I believe in love and in matchmaking as a feasible concept to achieve it. Real connections are rare, but rare connections are real. This is the right platform to test that hypothesis,” she said.

For the relationship expert, the process goes far beyond matching people based on chemistry or attraction. She shared that the experts spend time examining relationship histories, communication styles, life goals and psychological factors before pairing participants.

One of the biggest misconceptions viewers have about the show, according to Mashigo, is believing that the experts can predict exactly which couples will succeed.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that deserves to be respected. However, the matchmaking process is based on expertise that is clinically and psychologically informed,” she explained.

She also addressed criticism that often comes from viewers who disagree with certain matches. While she respects differing opinions, Mashigo says the process is rooted in professional expertise and informed by psychology and relationship science.

“Above the matchmaking process, nothing supersedes the state of the heart, and that always presents itself for adjudication. At times, science cannot examine the heart,” she said.

According to Mashigo, one of the most important ingredients in a successful match is willingness.

Without focusing on instant chemistry or sparks, she believes strong relationships are built by people who are willing to discover each other, compromise and choose consistency.

“A strong match is assessed on the basis of willingness. Willingness to discover the character traits that teach you to compromise and the behaviours that need to be unlearned as a means to embrace the love that is envisioned.”

She added that many people place too much emphasis on finding someone exciting instead of finding someone dependable.

“Most importantly, it is the willingness to choose consistency over chemistry, reliability over romance and someone who will show up for you rather than simply providing the ‘sparkles’.”

When pairing couples, Mashigo says the experts pay close attention to the difference between what participants want and what they actually need.

While many people may desire an attractive partner, she believes qualities such as kindness, dependability and emotional maturity are far more important for long-term success.

The team also spends time exploring the reasons people have applied for the experiment and whether they are genuinely ready for marriage.

Away from the show, Mashigo believes many people unknowingly sabotage their own search for love.

She identified dependency, seeking validation from others and ignoring red flags as some of the most common mistakes people make when entering relationships.

“Many people seek a partner to fill an emotional void, cure loneliness or provide a sense of worth. Healthy relationships are usually built between two individuals who already have a reasonably stable sense of self.”

She also warned against falling in love with a person’s potential instead of who they currently are.

“People often become attached to who they hope someone will become rather than who that person currently is.”

As for season three, Mashigo hinted that viewers are in for surprises. She revealed that some of the couples exceeded expectations and showed resilience during difficult moments.

“It’s beautiful to see a couple go through a rough patch and still choose each other. This season, we have certainly been surprised.”

Reflecting on the new group of brides and grooms, Mashigo said many arrived carrying unresolved experiences from their past, while others had strong expectations about what they believed they deserved from a relationship.

“Notions of true masculinity and femininity were challenged. What does marriage in South Africa look like in this day and age? 'Married at First Sight' tells us the truth.”

The holiday season is set to be stolen yet again, as the Grinch makes his official return.

Twenty-six years after the green grouch first took over cinemas, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are in active development on a live-action sequel to the 2000 blockbuster "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

The original dream team is planning a massive return to Whoville with Jim Carrey in ongoing talks to reprise his iconic, manic role as the Grinch, while director Ron Howard is expected to return behind the camera to bring the sequel to life.

Powerhouse comedy trio Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel are writing the screenplay. Interestingly, this trio previously collaborated on another Dr. Seuss universe project, the 2003 live-action "The Cat in the Hat".

However, getting this sequel off the ground has been no easy feat.

For over two decades, one of the biggest hurdles to a sequel has always been Carrey's vocal dread of the original movie's gruelling make-up process.

The transformation famously required hours in a chair and specialised military endurance training just to cope with the heavy prosthetics.

Carrey described the entire experience as "being buried alive every day". The reality of the make-up chair was so intense that on the very first day, it pushed the actor to his absolute limit.

After that first brutal session, he went back to his trailer in a fit of rage, kicked a hole through the wall and told director Howard he was quitting the movie.

To help him survive the production, the studio had to bring in a CIA specialist to teach Carrey survival and distraction tactics.

By the time filming wrapped, Carrey had put the make-up on 92 times. The intense mental training ultimately paid off.

He later joked that the torture training worked so well that by the end of the shoot, "you could literally hit me in the face with a baseball bat and I would have gone ... 'Good morning! Nice to see you!'"

Thankfully, technology has evolved since the year 2000.

Carrey has previously indicated that modern filmmaking has changed his outlook on returning to the character: "The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process... And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world."

While it isn't confirmed yet whether the sequel will utilise a blend of performance capture or traditional prosthetics, CGI advances make a return much more comfortable for the star.

Because the project is still in the script and negotiation phase, no official plot details or release date have been announced yet.

What we do know is that the project is being developed in close partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, supervised by CEO Susan Brandt.

The source material does have a blueprint; however, in late 2023, Dr. Seuss Enterprises released an official book sequel titled "How the Grinch Lost Christmas!"

This new story takes place one year after the original tale and follows the Grinch as he tries to win Whoville's hidden Christmas tree contest.

Whether the film adapts this directly or creates an entirely original story remains to be seen, but fans are already eager to see how the mean one gets his groove back.

Phongolo explained that although she usually chooses not to respond to rumours, she felt compelled to address this one because repeated narratives can shape how people perceive her.

“I keep quiet because I know it’s never really worth it to address it, but the narrative STICKS, and people start receiving you as a person you’re not. And men feed into these stories because it SERVES them!”

Her comments led to a debate online, with some social media users applauding her for speaking up, while others criticised Kaybee and argued that he should have immediately shut down the rumours instead of engaging with them.

Responding to some of the criticism, the musician defended himself and appeared frustrated by the backlash.

As South Africa marked 50 years since the Soweto Uprising, rapper Stogie T took a moment to ask a question that continues to echo across generations: Are we truly free?

The award-winning lyricist shared a thoughtful message on Instagram during Youth Day commemorations, reflecting on the legacy of June 16, 1976, and what freedom means half a century later.

"It’s been 50 years since the youth uprising of June 16, 1976. The act of remembrance must include an audit of the promise," he wrote.

The rapper said that the responsibility now rests with those who inherited the legacy of the young people who marched through Soweto in protest against apartheid education policies.

"As descendants of that uprising, still running with the baton, for the South African project," he added.

His reflections moved beyond politics and into the personal. Drawing from scripture, he spoke about a form of liberation that cannot be taken away by governments, systems or changing social conditions.

"I left to reflect on true liberation found in the radical autonomy of the soul," he wrote, before quoting Galatians 5:1: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free."

For the rapper, freedom begins within.

"This is the ultimate subversion. A freedom that begins within, an unshakable truth that no state, no system, and no history can ever colonise or revoke."

His comments arrived as South Africans reflected on one of the defining moments in the country's history.

On June 16, 1976, thousands of black school learners took to the streets of Soweto to protest the forced use of Afrikaans in schools. The demonstrations were met with police violence, and more than 200 young people lost their lives.

The image of Hector Pieterson became a symbol of resistance around the world.

Fifty years later, many believe the struggle has changed shape rather than disappeared.

While the youth of 1976 fought for access to quality education, many young South Africans today are battling unemployment, poverty and limited economic opportunities.

Historians and community leaders have also urged South Africans not to let Youth Day become only a day of concerts and celebrations.

Instead, they argue that it should remain a moment to confront inequality and renew the promise of a better future.

Street photographer Quaniet Richards’ debut solo exhibition opened in Cape Town on Thursday night and proved picture perfect.

The exhibition, The Street Is My Stage | Moments in Monochrome, was held at Dweba Art & Café on Longmarket Street.

It forms part of his community photography project #HumansOfCapeTown and also marked its official launch as an organisation.

Richards told guests photography had changed his life.

"When I started walking the streets of Cape Town with a camera a few years ago, I never imagined that it would lead to a moment like this," he said.

"It gave me space to slow down, to observe, feel and connect.

"Most importantly, it helped me dream again."

He said the project had grown into something bigger than photography.

"#HumansOfCapeTown became more than a photography project," he said.

"It became a community.

"A place where strangers became friends, where stories were shared and where people from different walks of life came together through a shared love for photography and human connection."

Richards announced four focus areas for the organisation going forward, including a youth programme called The Visionary Lens, wellness programmes, corporate photo walks, and the continuation of his free public photo community.

"I believe the most important lens we can give young people is the ability to see what is possible."

His book, #HumansOfCapeTown | silhouettes in the city, and photographic prints went on sale at the exhibition for the first time, with a portion of proceeds going towards the organisation's future programmes.

"This has never only been about photography. It has always been about people."

Richards began photography in January 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Like many people, that period was a time of uncertainty, loss and reflection.

"Photography began as a way to clear my mind and process what was happening around me, but very quickly it became something deeper.

"It gave me a voice when words felt insufficient. It helped me reconnect with myself and with people,” he said.

He said his three children are his inspiration.

“Qaylah, Aisha and Yusuf ground me, challenge me and constantly remind me to stay present.

"Much of how I see the world, and how I photograph it, is shaped by being a parent and learning to slow down and notice what truly matters,” he said.

The exhibition is open to the public from June 20 to July 18, and is free of charge.

"Is the river an honest mirror of our nature? Are still waters a reflection of us?"

These lines open the inquiry of Owele, the celebrated poetry collection by Sihle Ntuli, who is set to host a book event at Exclusive Books in The Pavilion, Westville, on June 25.

The evening marks his first solo domestic appearance following international writing residencies in New Zealand and Austria, as well as his recent participation in the Articulate Africa 2026 festival.

Ntuli will speak alongside Khaya Sithole, who according to Ntuli, will bring some "added gravitas" to the evening. The event aims to build local attendance and highlight the region's creative output.

"Securing Exclusive Books, one of the large book chains in the country, was no easy feat," Ntuli said.

He noted that organisers hope to drive attendance by appealing to those who can help get the message out "that we are doing literary and poetry in the UNESCO city of Durban, just like the other major SA literary hubs like Johannesburg and Cape Town."

The discussion will focus on Ntuli’s poetry collection, Owele, published by the independent South African press uHlanga.

The collection is partially written in isiZulu, which Ntuli described as "especially historic for indigenous languages in South Africa."

Owele has already appeared on the year-end long lists of major African publications, including Brittle Paper and Open Country.

The upcoming event follows Ntuli's selection for the Margaret Egan Caselberg Trust Cities of Literature residency in New Zealand in 2025.

Ntuli said that his hosts during the residency were "extremely delighted to have been featured on an international platform" before his subsequent writing work in Austria.

Die Potplant: ’n Tragedie - The Potted Plant: A Tragedy

"Die Potplant: ’n Tragedie" is a cabaret comedy-drama about a lonely office lobby potplant that secretly longs for more than decoration duty. While plants are meant to bring beauty and joy, this one feels stuck, bored and a little forgotten.

Through humour, song and imagination, she escapes her dull surroundings and reveals hidden dreams. Other characters enter the story, adding comic commentary and playful layers. The production explores themes of isolation and expression.

With the winter school holidays approaching, parents will be pleased to find a whimsical production to keep their children entertained. 

But first, it is worth noting that the Market Theatre is currently commemorating its golden 50th anniversary.

The venue is set to honour its creative heritage from June 19 to 21 by staging several influential works.

At the helm of that list is "Sarafina!" And the original cast has been invited to the historic moment, having last shared the stage in 1991. 

Premiering at The Market Theatre in 1987, “Sarafina!” was the creation of the late, highly regarded playwright and producer Mbongeni Ngema. Following its debut, the production garnered immense international acclaim.

As a global cultural phenomenon, the play highlighted the struggles of South African youth under apartheid. It remains one of the most celebrated and impactful productions to ever originate from The Market Theatre.

Nhlanhla Ngema, the younger brother of the late creator of “Sarafina!”, expressed the sentiments of the original cast members by stating: "Returning to The Market Theatre with my fellow cast members is both emotional and deeply meaningful. ‘Sarafina!’ is more than a production; it is a movement that gave a voice to a generation and showcased the resilience, courage and talent of South Africans to the world. 

“To reunite 35 years after our last performance together, in the very institution that helped launch this historic production, is a fitting tribute to my brother’s legacy and to everyone who contributed to making Sarafina! a global phenomenon. 

“We are honoured to be part of The Market Theatre's 50th anniversary celebrations and to share this moment with audiences old and new."

To celebrate this special anniversary, several members of the original production are reuniting. The participating cast includes Baby Cele, Ntombikhona Dlamini, Lindiwe Dlamini, Sboniso Khumalo, and Thandekile Mqadi. Joining them are Kipizane Skweyiya, Nandi Ndlovu, Linda Mtolo, Lindiwe Hlengwa and Zandile Hlengwa.

Peter Pan Jr. 

This highly anticipated production is essential viewing for families interested in quality children's theatre.

Under the direction of Jill Girard, the cast features Raymond Skinner in the title role of Peter Pan, while Lesedi Rich takes on the dual roles of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling. Bethany-Joy Jiyane portrays Mrs. Darling and Tiger Lily, with Luciano Zuppa and Junior Geel appearing as Smee and a Pirate, respectively, alongside other various characters.

Girard said: “I’ve always loved seeing parents bringing their children to the theatre and overhearing them tell them that they, too, discovered the magic of live theatre there as children.”

Based on the original work by J.M. Barrie, the production is built on a foundation of adventure, song and dance.

The director added: “Peter Pan and Neverland have sustained popularity for over a century because they embody the universal, bittersweet longing for eternal youth, imagination and freedom from adult responsibility.

“The story, first appearing in 1904, remains special because it balances whimsical adventure with deeper, often darker themes of abandonment and the inevitability of growing up.”

Dr Musa Mthombeni has added yet another impressive achievement to his growing list of medical qualifications.

The presenter and doctor recently announced that he has officially completed his sub-specialty training in Interventional Neuroradiology and Endovascular Neurosurgery, qualifying as a neurointerventionist.

Using his trademark wit, he shared the news on Instagram, Mthombeni reflected on the demanding journey that led to the milestone, complete with his trademark humour.

“Vukani! Sekunjalo! Daddies are up! After over a year of very early morning, parking lot complaints about people wanting to scratch my #class, late nights in angiotheatre and probably consuming way too much coffee, I’ve officially wrapped up my sub-specialty training in Interventional Neuroradiology/ Endovascular Neurosurgery.”

“Translation: I am now a fully qualified Neurointerventionist. Yes, you can trust me around your brain’s blood vessels. Phakathi inside,” he further broke it down to his followers.

What is a neurointerventionist?

According to an article on "Allina Health", a neurointerventionist is a highly specialised medical expert who diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the blood vessels of the brain, spine and neck using minimally invasive, image-guided procedures.

Neurointervention is a surgical specialty that integrates different elements of neuroradiology, neurology and neurosurgery.

Mthombeni said he is looking forward to putting his new skills into practice in a field he has grown passionate about.

“I am so excited to step into this next chapter, apply these skills, and changing some lives in a field I have absolutely fallen in love with.”

The doctor also took a moment to thank the people who supported him throughout the fellowship.

“A big thank you to Dr Ro (If I know what I’m doing today, it’s entirely his fault), my colleagues, my mentors, my incredible wife (who deserves a medal for putting up with my fellowship schedule and me doing unscheduled DSAs every 2 days), and my family.

“I couldn’t have done it without your unwavering support-and your tolerance of me talking about blood vessels 24/7.”

He ended the announcement with a simple message: “Time to get to work!”

The achievement adds to an already impressive academic journey. Mthombeni obtained his MBBCh degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2015 and has continued to build his medical credentials while maintaining a successful career in television and entertainment.

In 2023, he passed the FC Rad Diag SA board examinations before graduating with a Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Radiology from Wits in 2025.

"The Polygamist" will have you wondering whether commitment was ever meant to survive human behaviour, because what unfolds here feels like a case study in emotional damage dressed up as domestic life.

It’s giving "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" energy; it’s giving “Who hurt these people?”  and somehow, we can’t stop watching. 

Based on Sue Nyathi’s novel, the Netflix series throws viewers straight into the world of Joyce Gomora, played by Gugu Gumede, a woman who starts off looking like she’s got life perfectly packaged.

Beautiful home, powerful husband and polished image. The kind of life that looks good on the outside but is practically rotting beneath the surface. 

Her husband Jonasi, played by S'Dumo Mtshali, is the centre of the storm. A successful, smooth-talking businessman who somehow manages to juggle multiple lives like it’s a sport. On paper, he is the dream provider. In reality, he is the kind of man you do not want to be with. 

Credit must go to Mtshali because he plays the role so convincingly that there are moments when you genuinely dislike him. Not because he is loud or villainous, but because he embodies a type of person many viewers will recognise.

The man who believes his money, influence and status can shield him from consequences. The series also highlights something uncomfortable: there will always be people drawn to that lifestyle, willing to overlook the red flags for the promise of luxury, power or proximity to success.

It serves as a reminder that money can sometimes make people believe they are untouchable, right before they make the very mistakes that bring everything crashing down.

When Joyce finally discovers the truth, she does not respond like a quiet, suffering wife waiting for sympathy. She responds like a woman who has reached her limit. There are tears and moments of disbelief, but there is also anger that refuses to stay hidden.

In many ways, she reminded me of Jennifer Lopez's character in "Enough", a woman who eventually realises that surviving betrayal is not the same as accepting it. Both characters reach a point where self-preservation becomes more important than maintaining the illusion.

That is one of the show's strongest decisions. Joyce is not written as a passive victim. She is messy, emotional and sometimes reckless, but she is never invisible. Her pain takes up space, and so does her fight to reclaim her life.

Then there is Matipa, played by Kwanele Mthethwa, the mistress who is not just a side character but a whole parallel storyline of ambition, survival, and questionable choices.

She is not written as simply “the other woman”, even though the show occasionally slips into that trap. Instead, she exists in that uncomfortable space where power, money, and emotional vulnerability collide. And naturally, it all gets complicated fast.

What "The Polygamist" does well is drama - I mean, it is a telenovela after all. This is full-volume, doors-slamming, emotional-burnout storytelling. And like most things I tend to review, it's not for the faint-hearted.

Certain scenes can be triggering, particularly for anyone who has experienced betrayal, manipulation or toxic relationships. At the same time, it can be surprisingly eye-opening.

Every episode ends like it is personally trying to ruin your peace. One minute, there’s a family gathering that looks almost civil, and the next, there’s betrayal being exposed in public like it’s a press conference. 

The series constantly reminds us that perspective matters. Everyone in this story believes they are justified in their choices. Everyone has their reasons. But having a reason does not mean escaping the fallout.

That was perhaps the biggest takeaway for me. One thing I have often encountered in life is that every decision comes with consequences. They do not always arrive in the way we expect, and they do not always mirror the original action perfectly.

Netflix’s The Polygamist may be filled with drama, betrayal and shocking turns, but the series also serves as a broader reflection of social realities in South Africa.

At the centre of the story is Jonasi Gomora, a wealthy businessman whose carefully built empire begins to collapse as his secrets and multiple relationships unravel. The fallout extends beyond his personal life, affecting his children, extended family and professional circle.

A key theme explored in the series is fatherlessness, a challenge that continues to affect many South African households. The story portrays children dealing with emotional neglect, confusion and rejection, highlighting that absence can be physical as well as emotional, even when financial support is present.

The series also examines the long-term emotional impact often associated with “daddy issues”, where characters struggle with identity, validation and affection, sometimes leading to unhealthy relationships.

Another prominent theme is transactional relationships and power imbalances driven by wealth. Jonasi’s financial status influences those around him, raising questions about dependency, control and the boundaries between love and financial security.

The pressure to maintain appearances is also woven into the narrative. On the surface, relationships appear stable and successful, but behind closed doors characters grapple with secrecy and emotional strain, echoing the gap between public perception and private reality.

Generational trauma forms a further thread throughout the storyline, with the series suggesting that cycles of infidelity, emotional neglect and secrecy can persist unless actively confronted and broken.

Viewers have responded strongly to the show’s familiarity, noting that it reflects real-life dynamics within families and communities, including issues of infidelity, toxic masculinity, financial dependence and societal expectations placed on women.

Ultimately, The Polygamist positions itself as more than entertainment. It functions as social commentary, using drama to highlight uncomfortable but widely recognisable truths about love, power, family and accountability in contemporary South Africa.

One of the tracks getting his full attention was "Shayi'Moto" by Mellow & Sleazy and Scotts Maphuma. Smith was also seen enjoying Burna Boy’s verse on "Tshwala Bam", proving that African music has firmly secured its seat at the global table.

And if anyone was wondering whether Smith was simply being polite, the answer is no. The fashionista looked fully committed to the assignment. The moves were there. The rhythm was there. The confidence is also there.

Then again, when is it ever not? This is the same guy who once rocked up with a castle-shaped headpiece and somehow made it look like a perfectly normal Tuesday.

Earlier this year, he made headlines after being announced as the men's creative director for Christian Louboutin during Paris Fashion Week, further cementing his reputation as one of fashion's most unconventional stars.

Actress Daveigh Chase, who was the titular voice of Lilo in the Disney animated feature film "Lilo & Stitch," died on Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to US media. She was 35.

Her father, John David Schwallier, told the New York Times that Chase died in a hospital from complications of bacterial meningitis and a blood infection.

Schwallier told the Times his estranged daughter began struggling with drugs at age 13, and had been homeless and living in Los Angeles, near the hospital where she died.

Chase was 11 when "Lilo & Stitch" became a box office hit, and stayed on as the character's voice for television and video game projects.

She was also cast as the English language voice of Chihiro, the lead heroine in Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away," which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Her career as a child actor included live-action work, and she appeared in a Campbell's Soup commercial and played a kid sister to Jake Gyllenhaal in his title turn as "Donnie Darko."

In 2002's "The Ring," Chase played the part of villain Samara Morgan who crawled out of televisions, with her long black hair obscuring her face, to terrify viewers. The performance earned her the "Best Villain" MTV Movie Award in 2003.

TMZ identified her boyfriend as Roy Hernandez and cited a fundraising web page he created to fund her health care wherein he detailed some of her hardships.

"After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA," Hernandez wrote on the page. "Together, we found moments of happiness and hope."

Chase's representation did not immediately respond to a query from AFP.

Reflecting on her latest project, "Couture", American actress Angelina Jolie recently shared insights into the meaningful experience of working alongside her son, Maddox Jolie.

Speaking to “Entertainment Tonight”, Jolie shared that the experience was exciting as she reflected on their time together on set.

“Oh, it was beautiful. His French is better than mine, so that was helpful. He did a lot of my line readings with me,” the 51-year-old said.

The actress further spoke about the experience of having Maddox on set while filming some of the film’s emotional scenes.

“It’s a rare thing when you have a child working in a film with you and you as a woman are doing different things.

“They watch you do things. And so, you’re sitting in a hospital room, getting this news, thinking about life and you step out and there’s your son. And of course, you’re thinking in the back of your mind, both of you, that there will be a real day like this,” Jolie said.

In the film, the mother of six plays Maxine, a low-budget horror movie director juggling a film commission from a French luxury fashion house while being a single mother going through a divorce.

Maxine's world changes after she receives a breast cancer diagnosis.

Maddox served as an assistant director in the film.

Jolie noted that the project was deeply personal for both her and Maddox because her own mother had battled cancer.

“I think my fighting spirit is finally back. I lost it for a bit. I got kind of taken down a little bit, and it’s coming back in large part, thanks to my children, who are now older and encouraging it,” she said.

When Bafana Bafana take on Czechia in a crucial Fifa World Cup Group A clash this evening, one person will be making history before the first whistle is even blown.

American referee Tori Penso has been appointed to officiate the match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, becoming the first American woman to referee a men's senior Fifa World Cup match.

The appointment is another landmark moment in a career that has already broken barriers across world football.

Penso is only the second woman in history to referee a men's World Cup match after French official Stéphanie Frappart paved the way at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The news has generated excitement among football fans across the globe. South African sports broadcaster Xoliswa Zondo was among those celebrating the achievement.

"Meet the American lady who will referee Bafana Bafana's World Cup match against Czechia on Thursday. Thirty-nine-year-old Tori Penso's career highlight includes refereeing the final of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup."

Born Mary Victoria Hancock in Florida, Penso has built a reputation as one of football's most respected match officials. She is married to fellow professional referee Chris Penso, and together they have three daughters.

Her journey into refereeing started at the age of 14 when she began officiating matches to earn extra money. At one point, she pursued a career in advertising but eventually made the decision to focus on refereeing full-time.

That decision paid off.

In 2020, Penso became the first woman in two decades to referee a regular-season Major League Soccer match. A year later, she earned her Fifa badge and led the first all-female officiating team in a men's Concacaf World Cup qualifier.

Her profile continued to rise in 2023 when she took charge of the Fifa Women's World Cup final in Sydney. Spain defeated England 1-0 in the showpiece event, and Penso became the first American referee to oversee a senior World Cup final.

The same year, she also became only the second woman to referee at the Fifa Club World Cup.

For the Bafana Bafana versus Czechia encounter, Penso will work alongside assistant referees Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt.

The trio knows each other well. They officiated the 2023 Women's World Cup final together and are regarded as one of the most experienced teams in international football.

3. Jub Jub released on R5k bail over alleged kidnapping and firearm incident

Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye, a well-known media personality, was granted R5 000 bail by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg following an urgent application for his release. His arrest stemmed from a reported altercation with an e-hailing driver in the Edenvale area.

The confrontation allegedly began after the driver dropped off a female passenger at an Edenvale home.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe stated that the dispute intensified when Maarohanye accused the driver of having a romantic involvement with his girlfriend.

During the encounter, Maarohanye reportedly fired a gun toward the driver. Fortunately, the driver was not injured and fled the scene to report the incident at a local police station.

4. Zari Hassan and Shakib Cham Lutaaya separate after five years

After five years of marriage, Ugandan reality TV personality and socialite Zari Hassan has confirmed her split from Shakib Cham Lutaaya.

On Monday, the Bellville Magistrate's Court concluded the multi-year case, sentencing Mrs Leo and four co-accused for defrauding two women of over R3.2 million.

Following the lengthy legal process, she has returned home and resumed posting on Instagram.
